Vikram Chatwal

Vikram (born 1 November 1971 in Addis Ababa) is an American hotelier. In April 1999, at the age of 28, he created Chatwal Hotels, an independent hotel group of six luxury hotels in three cities.^{[citation needed]} The flagship in the hospitality group is the Dream Hotel.^{[citation needed]}

Chatwal has received media attention due to his connection to Lindsay Lohan.^{[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]}

Biography

Chatwal is of Indian Sikh heritage. His father, Sant Singh Chatwal, is an Indian-American businessman. Chatwal was born in Addis Ababa and his family moved to Montreal in the 1970s and then to New York in the 1980s, where his father invested in fine dining and hotels.^[14] Chatwal attended the United Nations International School in New York City.^[15][16] After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1994 where he was a member of the Owl Society, Chatwal "had trouble finding his way professionally."^[17][18] His father, Sant Singh Chatwal, founded Hampshire Hotels and Resorts.

Chatwal was named one of the world's most eligible bachelors by a BBC television program the magazine Radar. He appeared in the movie One Dollar Curry and became the first Sikh model to appear in Vogue.^[18]

He was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year at the first South Asia Media Awards in New York in June 2005,^[19] and on June 19, 2006 he was featured on the cover of Forbes Asia.^[20]

He is currently traveling in Asia with Jimmy Noonan, Former Dir. of Security for WWE. They were seen at AmFar India event.

Marriage

In 2005, it was announced that Vikram Chatwal would marry Indian model Priya Sachdev.^[21] The multi-million dollar wedding celebrations took place in February 2006 was spread across ten days and three Indian cities, Mumbai to Udaipur and Delhi, and was attended by 600 guests from 26 countries who were transported on private chartered jets.^[22] Guests attending the wedding included steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal,^[23] model Naomi Campbell,^[23] Patricia Velásquez,^[15] rapper P Diddy,^[23] HRH Prince Nikolaos of Greece,^[15] Bill Clinton,^[23] and several Indian celebrities.

As of 2011, Chatwal has separated from Priya Sachdev.^[24]

On September 3, 2013, he proposed marriage to Spanish model Esther Cañadas at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City.

Controversies

On November 8, 2009, Chatwal was committed for drug addiction treatment at the psychiatric ward of Masina Hospital in Byculla.^[25][26]

In February 2010, it was reported that Chatwal had attended a rehab facility for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction.^[27][24]

In August 2010, it was reported Chatwal's flagship property the Dream Hotel in Manhattan was scheduled to enter foreclosure proceedings within 90 days if he did not make payment on a $99 million mortgage.^[28]

In 2011, Chatwal checked in to Promises, a rehabilitation facility, in Malibu, California, to be treated for addiction.^[17] Chatwal has also been an inpatient at Hazelden, a residential treatment center in Minnesota.^[17]

In 2012, Lindsay Lohan was arrested at Chatwal's Dream Hotel.^[13][29][30]

On April 2, 2013,^[31] Chatwal was arrested at Florida's Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport and charged with drug trafficking six grams of heroin and possession of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, Xanax, lorazepam, ketamine and various other drugs.^{[32][33][34][35][36][37][38]} Chatwal was released on bond the next day.^[31][39][40]

On April 28, 2013, Chatwal was reported to have been kicked out of the Cherry Restaurant, located in Chatwal’s own Dream Hotel.^[41][42][43]

Chatwal was sentenced to 12 months of residential treatment, and as of August 2013, is a patient at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut.^[44] Chatwal's plea deal includes being subjected to random drug testing.
