Vestre Fængsel is the main jail of the Danish capital, Copenhagen. Erected in 1895, it is Denmark's largest prison with a total capacity of 530 inmates. It primarily houses pretrial detainees, not convicted felons.
During much of the German occupation of Denmark, Vestre Fængsel was operated by German police.
In relationship with the Copenhagen Climate Council the jail will be rebuilt so that it can contain some 400 extra prisoners. Cells designed for one inmate will house two instead and 40 inmates will be placed in the gym.[1]
