Controversial Remarks
Venkaiah Naidu is known for making controversial remarks. In one such case, he justified the fake encounter of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a press conference in 2007 as he reportedly said that saw "nothing wrong" in the 'fake' encounter of "a criminal like"Sohrabuddin Sheikh, who was gunned down by the police in Gujarat in November 2005.Terming Sohrabuddin Sheikh as a "gangster and extortionist" Naidu expressed the opinion that the police could not be expected "to deal softly with such elements". However, in the same press conference he evaded questions related to the brutal murder of Sohrabuddin Sheikh's wife Kauserbi by the Gujarat Police saying "an inquiry has already been ordered by the Gujarat government into that and punitive action initiated against some police officials".[1]
Venkaiah Naidu is also known to defend Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on other fake encounter cases such as Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case saying Narendra Modi cannot be held responsible for everything that happens in the state.[2]
