Venganoor has been described as a very ordinary village near southern end of Kerala, India, which is situated 13 km north of Thiruvananthapuram. It is known as the birthplace of Ayyankali, the great Harijan leader of Kerala.[1]
The panchayat has made great progress through the efforts of its congressman, Rufus Daniel, and its citizens. It now has been recognised as the first S1 village in Kerala by the State Planning Board. This designation recognises that the village is working toward the goals of self-reliance, sufficiency and sustainability.[2] Under a new rural development program, Venganoor has been selected as the site to build computer education facilities, a reference library, and a school for vocational training. In addition, drinking water will be provided.[3] The village is being recognised for the progress it has made in the eradication of poverty, the empowerment of women, and its promotion of a sense of community.[4]
