Venafi

Venafi, Inc. is a privately held software company which provides software to manage, protect and secure encryption keys and digital certificates. Venafi is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Overview

Businesses and governments rely on cryptographic keys and digital certificates to ensure that communications and transactions are private, trusted and regulatory compliant.^[1] These technologies underpin the modern world of secure communications, card payments, online shopping, smartphones, tablets and cloud computing.^[2]

Many certification authorities (CA) such as Comodo Group, DigiCert, Entrust, GeoTrust, GlobalSign, Thawte, and VeriSign sell SSL certificates to secure websites, applications & devices. Venafi offers software that can discover certificates & manage the renewal process among multiple CAs.^[3] The Certificate Manager product can also provision certificates to many devices.^[4] Venafi provides a single point of management for many key and certificate types across a networked ecosystem. Venafi does not sell encryption and is not a CA.

Company Name

Venafi (Ven-uh-FIY) is a made-up word created by combining two Latin roots– Vena (vein or root) and Fides (trust or faith). Venafi manages the root of trust – the encryption keys and certificates.

Company History

Russell Thornton and Jayson Seegmiller, both University of Washington graduates, cofounded Venafi’s predecessor company in 1998. They incorporated the company as IMCentric in Washington State on October 26, 2000. They moved the company to Utah, filing an application to conduct business as IMCentric, Inc. in Orem, Utah on March 18, 2003. Thornton filed to change IMCentric’s state of incorporation from Washington to Delaware on April 1, 2004.^[5] Early 2005 saw the company’s leadership change from Thornton (President & CEO) and Seegmiller (Vice President, secretary, & treasurer) to Trell Rohovit (President & CEO). The headquarters then moved to Sandy, Utah and the company name was changed to Venafi. Jeff Hudson replaced Rohovit as CEO in October, 2010. Venafi relocated its headquarters to downtown Salt Lake City, Utah in July of 2013 and also set up an office in Palo Alto, California.
