Velika Hoča

Velika Hoča (Albanian: Hoça e Madhe; Serbian: Velika Hoča, Serbian Cyrillic: Велика Хоча) is a village in the municipality of Orahovac, in the Metohija region of Kosovo.[lower-alpha 1] It is one of the Serb enclaves in Kosovo.

Demographics

As of January 2009 the village has around 700 residents, of whom the majority are Serbs. Before the Kosovo War of 1999 the village had around 2000 residents.

Agriculture

The main economic activity of Velika Hoča is viniculture.

Culture

Velika Hoča is a significant cultural centre in Kosovo. The village is noted for its 13 churches, some dating from the 12th century rule of Serbian Grand Duke Stefan Nemanja, others from the 14th and 16th centuries.

Religion

The village houses the churches of St Nicholas, St John, St Stephen, Holy Sunday, St Paraskeve, St Luke, St Anne, St Peter, Virgin Mary, and St Elias.
