Vavuniya railway station is a railway station in the city of Vavuniya in northern Sri Lanka. Owned by Sri Lanka Railways, the state-owned railway operator, the station is part of the Northern Line which links the north with the capital Colombo. The popular Yarl Devi service calls at the station.
History
Trains had been operating on the Northern Line since the beginning of the twentieth century. Vavuniya station was an intermediate stop for trains between Colombo and Jaffna.
In 1990, Northern Line trains stopped operating past Vavuniya because of the declining security condition. For nearly two decades, Vavuniya was the temporary terminus of the Northern Line.[1]
After the war ended in 2009, work started to rebuild the track and restore the Northern Line to Kankesanturai,[2] under the Uthuru Mithuru Project. Initially, the line was extended to Thandikulam,[3] but now to Omanthai.[4] Thus, Vavuniya is once again an intermediate station, but remains an important stop.
Services
The station is served by all Northern Line trains, including the Yal Devi.
