Vaughn offered him employment in the form of delivering packages. One of these packages was a bomb that exploded in the British Embassy, killing 17 people. To escape the country, John killed his friend, Lucas North, and took his identity before leaving Dakar, Vaughn and his girlfriend Maya Lahan behind.

Series 9

Vaughn located Lucas, now working for MI5, and approached him at the end of the first episode of series 9. He handed him a suitcase filled with possessions from his old life as John Bateman, including photos of Maya. After Lucas located Maya, Vaughn once again approached Lucas and asked him for an MI5 file codenamed Albany. When Lucas refused, he threatened to expose who he truly was to Maya. Lucas took Albany out of MI5's archives but it turned out to be a fake.

Vaughn once again approached him saying that he knew Lucas wouldn't work for him unless he had some leverage over him so he gave him leverage: Maya. He then sent Lucas to collect the real Albany file that was being held by Malcolm Wynn-Jones, a retired analyst who had worked with Lucas. Lucas collected the file but Vaughn realized that it was a fake once again. Lucas returned to Malcolm's house but he had left. In the final two episodes, it's revealed that Vaughn is working for the Chinese. With pressure building, Vaughn kidnaps Lucas' lover, Maya, and demands the file. This brings an angry confrontation between Vaughn and Lucas in a children's Play Park, in which Vaughn fires a gun into the air and Lucas stabs Vaughn fatally in the leg. Although Vaughn manages to make it back to Maya's safehouse, he is found dead by MI5 soon after
