Varun Dhawan is an Indian actor and a former model. Dhawan marked his debut in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year (2012) — and won a Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance – Male.

Early life

Varun Dhawan was born in Mumbai to film director, David Dhawan and Karuna Dhawan. He is the younger brother of director Rohit Dhawan, who made his directorial debut with the 2011 film, Desi Boyz. He is also the nephew of actor Anil Dhawan and is the cousin of actor Siddharth Dhawan. He has a degree in business management from Nottingham Trent University, UK.

Career

Prior to his acting debut, Dhawan worked as assistant director to Karan Johar on his 2010 film, My Name Is Khan. In 2012, Dhawan made his debut in Karan Johar's Student Of The Year alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt.[1] His performance and dancing skills was appreciated with film critic Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama who stated, "Varun is excessively talented, supremely confident and hardly look like first-time actor. Photogenic, charming and self-assured,shine in his respective role, enact his part with gusto. Varun is a talent one can't help but marvel at. In fact, Varun is here to stay!"[2] Similarly CNN-IBN film critic Rajeev Masand wrote, "It’s Varun Dhawan who stands out with a confident, charming turn, able to tackle both comical and vulnerable scenes with ease".[3] Film critic Komal Nahta commented, "Varun Dhawan does very well as the spoilt brat. Varun is the best dancer among all three."[4] Raedita Tandan from Filmfare wrote, "Varun has done his best not to seem like newcomer and emerges triumphant. Varun is charming his brilliant dancing skills deserve a special mention. He makes confident debut."[5] The film was released on 19 October 2012.

Dhawan is slated to appear in Main Tera Hero, is a remake of a Telugu film, Kandireega being produced by Ekta Kapoor's production house, Balaji Motion Pictures.[6] The project will be directed by his father, David Dhawan, and Varun Dhawan will play a musician.[7] In preparation for his role, he enrolled in singing classes.[8] He has also been signed by Saif Ali Khan's production house, Illuminati Films, to do a film directed by Sriram Raghavan.[9] He is also confirmed for Karan Johar's next production Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania opposite Student of the Year co star Alia Bhatt.[10]
