Variola Vera is a 1982 Yugoslav film directed by Goran Marković. The subject of the film is the 1972 outbreak of smallpox in Yugoslavia, more specifically the events related to the epidemic and the subsequent quarantine at Belgrade's General Hospital. Although inspired by the real events, the movie features elements of horror.
Plot
At the beginning short it is shown how a Kosovar pilgrim on his way back to Belgrade from the Middle East visit a bazaar.The pilgrim buys a flute from a man who is visibly ill. Upon his return to Belgrade, the pilgrim starts to show signs of illness and is transported to the city's General Hospital. His disease is initially misdiagnosed and the smallpox virus starts spreading through the hospital very quickly. Once the disease is correctly identified, the authorities attempt to subdue the outbreak by declaring martial law, enforcing quarantine and enlisting the help of the World Health Organization. The World Health Organization send a specialist in epidemiology to help doctors at hospital to fight disease. In whole movie it is shown the scenes of high psychological tension between people, doctors, situation in which young women doctor with her boyfriend save life of another doctor who had heart attack, that theft by one doctor who wanted to save himself, and other aspect of psychological/horror with people in small space. At the end doctors manage to stop the disease. After well done job, Specialist from UN takes of the Bio Hazard gas mask he has been wearing all the time. When doctor second in command notices that UN doctor has scars from same disease they been fighting whole time, and asked him why,since he has immunitiy he said that mask was psychological measure, so that everybody in hospital would act according to procedure it situation they were.
