Vapi (IAST: vāpī, pronunciation (help·info)), is a city and a municipality in Valsad district in the southern part of the Indian state of Gujarat. It is situated on the banks of the Damanganga River. It is the largest city in the Valsad district.
Around 28 km south of the district headquarters city of Valsad, it is surrounded by the Union Territories of Daman to the west and Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the east. Economic and industrial growth in recent decades has blurred the physical boundaries, and the small stretch of roughly 21 km of Daman-Vapi-Silvassa has almost become a monolith. The town originally belonged to the community of Desai (Anavil Bramhins) and is now a very important industrial town. It is the largest industrial area in Asia in terms of small-scale industries, dominated by chemical industry plants. It has been ranked among the most polluted places in the world.
Geography
National Highway 8 bisects the city, creating east and west parts — the western part being the original location of the town, and the eastern part consisting mainly of the industries and the newly constructed residential areas. Mumbai is roughly 140 km to the south, and the city of Surat is about 125 km to the north, both accessible via the modernised highway.
The Arabian Sea, at the delta of the Damangana, is about 7 km to the west. The city has tropical weather and enjoys three distinct seasons: mild winter, moderate summer, and heavy monsoon, with rainfall ranging from 100 inches to 120 inches per annum.
In addition to the old town, some of the other main residential areas and suburbs that make Vapi a city are Godal Nagar,Geeta Nagar, Gunjan, Chanod Colony, Vapi Town, Dungra, Hariya Park, Chala, Chhiri, and also up-coming Balitha and Salvav, with many other small areas.
Transportation
National Highway 8 passes through Vapi. It is connected to all major cities of India. It is the only place from where one can visit Daman and Silvassa. City bus service is available in Vapi.
To cater to industry, the city handles a huge amount of what is called a "floating population," and the Vapi railway station on the Mumbai-Vadodara rail link of Western Railway (India) has become the direct beneficiary in terms of revenues due to daily commuters. Most of the trains passing through Vapi (including the August Kranti Rajdhani Express) stop there. Even Shatabdi express(BCT-ADI) stop there. It is the only city connecting two union territories i.e. Daman & Diu and Dadra-nagar haveli.
The railway station code for IRCTC is VAPI.
Industrial zone
Proximity to the larger cities of Mumbai, Surat, Vadodara, and Ahmedabad, coupled with liberal Government policy, has helped Vapi and surrounding areas attain their current level of industrial growth. The "Vapi Industrial Estate" was started by GIDC in 1967, and has spread to 11.4 km² and houses over 1400 industries, the majority of which are small-scale units (SSIs). [citation needed] Textile giants such as Alok industries, Welspun Terry Towels, Century Textiles, GHCL and Raymonds Limited have strong presence in Vapi and its nearby areas. United phosphorus, Arti Chemicals, Themis Chemicals, Micro Inks Limitedoperate their manufacturing plants in Vapi. Today, about 70% of the total industries in the township are chemical plants, mainly for chemical distillation and the production of pesticides, dyes, dye intermediaries and paints. Other major industries include paper, packaging, pharmaceuticals, plastics, rubber, textiles, wood, computer hardware and software, engineering workshops, glass, and food products. Another striking feature of Vapi is the Common Effluent Treatment Plant (or CETP). This is the largest of its kind in Asia[citation needed] and one of India's biggest effluent treatment plants in terms of capacity, treating the pollutants from these industries before the effluent is released into the river. The CETP is run by Vapi Waste and Effluent Management Company, promoted by the Vapi Industries Association[1] (also known as "paper hub")
Pollution
In 2007, the Blacksmith Institute listed Vapi fourth in the top ten of the most polluted places in the world.[2] There has been progress in cleaning up the area, and Vapi was removed from the list in 2009.[3]
This claim has been vehemently opposed by the Vapi Industries Association and Vapi Waste & Effluent Management Company Ltd., who filed a lawsuit against the Blacksmith Institute for 400 million rupees. The Blacksmith Institute has reported the pollution levels based on the Gujarat Pollution Control Board of 1998. But not much improvement has been reported since. The Common Effluent treatment plant does not meet all the parameters set by both state and central pollution control boards.[citation needed] Vapi railway yard is just adjacent to the platform and creates considerable air pollution while loading and unloading cement. The yard is not yet concreted.
Geographical importance
Vapi is surrounded by excellent locations for housing and recreation: Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Umbergaon, Sarigam, Bhilad, Udavada, Sanjan, Pardi.
Both the Union territories as well as Sarigam, Bhilad, Umbergaon, and Pardi, only 12–40 km from Vapi, are good residential and commercial areas. Daman and Silvassa (the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli) attract both Indian and international tourists. Vapi has played an important role in Gujarat's and India's success story.
