Vaniyambadi is a town and a municipality, part of the Vellore district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. & It known for leather industries, specially sheep crust which may used for leather garment etc

Etymology

Vaniyambadi derives from 'Vani', the name of the Hindu goddess Saraswati, and 'Padi', "to sing"; folklore suggests that Vani sang on the banks of the river Palar at the request of the Hindu Gods Vishnu and Shiva. Temples for Sundara Varadaraja Perumal (Vishnu) and Athitheeswarar (Shiva) with Prahannaayagee lie on the either side of the river.[1]

Geography

Vaniyambadi is located at 12°41′N 78°37′E / 12.68°N 78.62°E / 12.68; 78.62.[2] It has an average elevation of 363 metres (1190 feet) and lies on the banks of the Palar river. Yelagiri and Javadi Hills are to the south of the town.[1]

Demographics

As of the census of India 2001, Vaniyambadi had a population of 85,752 comprising 42,778 males and 42,974 females, making the sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) of the town to 1,005. A total of 11,480 people were under six years of age and the child sex ratio (number of females per thousand males under six years of age) stood at 960. The town had an average literacy of 78.45%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. A total of 11,646 comprising 15.68% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 64 comprising 0.09% of the population belonged to Scheduled tribes (ST). There were are total of 15,966 households in the town. As of 2001, Vaniyambadi had a total of 24,281 main workers: 142 cultivators, 121 agricultural labourers, 983 in house hold industries and 23,035 other workers. There was a total of 612 marginal workers: 1 marginal cultivators, 8 marginal agricultural labourers, 55 marginal workers in household industries and 548 other marginal workers.[3] .[4]


Culture

The major population comprises people following Hinduism and Islam. Tamil is majority spoken language along with Urdu language spoken by Muslims, while Telugu and Kannada are also prevalent due to the proximity of the neighboring states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Leather tanning is a major industry of the town. Agriculture, especially coconut plantations, is the other major source of livelihood.


Transport

Vaniyambadi is well connected by road and rail to major cities of India. The town is separated by a distance with Bangalore [144 km] , Chennai [199 km], Vellore [64 km] and Salem [139 km]. The town lies on the highway (NH 46) of the Bangalore-Chennai section which is part of the Golden Quadrilateral. A state highway connects the town to Tirupattur on the Vaniyambai-Salem(SH-18)section and Vaniyambadi-Gudiyattam(SH-130). The town also has a railway station and is also close to Jolarpet Railway Junction, where most of the long haul trains stop.The nearest Airport is Bangalore International Airport.[5]

Places of interest

The famous Hill station Yelagiri (Tirupattur Taluk) is about 25 km from the town. Javadi Hills is another small hill station nearby. Asia's second largest telescope, Vainu Bappu Observatory of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics which is situated at Kavalur Village near Vaniyambadi, is also a major attraction. Several centuries-old temples like Sundara Varadaraja (Azhagu) Perumal and Athitheeswarar are prominent places of worship in the town.
