Vancouver Centre is a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1917.
Geography
The district includes the neighbourhoods of Fairview, False Creek, Yaletown, Coal Harbour, Downtown Vancouver, the West End, Davie Village, the western extreme part of Strathcona, the easternmost part of Kitsilano, and Stanley Park in the City of Vancouver. The riding is quite young, affluent and diverse, with a large LGBT population, which has made Vancouver Centre one of the safest seats in Western Canada for the Liberals.
History
The electoral district was created in 1914 from parts of Vancouver City riding.
Its most high-profile Member of Parliament has been Kim Campbell, who was Prime Minister in 1993.
Future
The 2012 federal electoral boundaries redistribution concluded that the electoral boundaries of Vancouver Centre should be adjusted, and a modified electoral district of the same name will be contested in future elections.[3] The redefined Vancouver Centre loses a portion of its current territory from its southern end to the new district of Vancouver Granville. These new boundaries will be legally defined in the 2013 representation order, which is likely to come into effect upon the call of the 42nd Canadian federal election, scheduled for October 2015. In the unlikely event an election is called prior to April 2014, the current electoral boundaries would remain in effect.[4]
