Ust-Maya (Russian: Усть-Мая) is an urban locality (a settlement) and the administrative center of Ust-Maysky District of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located on the north bank of the Aldan River opposite the mouth of the Maya River, southeast of Yakutsk. Population: 2,923 (2010 Census);[1] 3,165 (2002 Census);[3] 3,514 (1989 Census).[4]

History

Ust-Maya was founded in 1930 as a base for gold mining activities on the Allakh-Yun and Yudoma rivers to the east. It was made the administrative centre of the newly created Ust-Maysky District in 1931.

During World War II, an airfield was built here for the Alaska-Siberian (ALSIB) air route used to ferry American Lend-Lease aircraft to the Eastern Front.[5]

In 1957 Ust-Maya received urban-type settlement status, however the district administration was moved to the settlement of Solnechny in 1972, remaining there until it returned to Ust-Maya in 1992.

Transportation

There are no year-round roads connecting to the town, however winter roads connect to Eldikan and Amga.

The Ust-Maya Airport (IATA: UMS) is located in the village of Petropavlovsk, 8 km to the south-east.

Climate

Ust-Maya has an extreme subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification Dfd). Winters are extremely cold with average temperatures from −43.0 to −35.3 °C (−45.4 to −31.5 °F) in January, while summers are warm with average temperatures from +12.1 to +25.4 °C (53.8 to 77.7 °F).
