Urtext is a word of German origin; ur- means "original," and text is as in English.[1]
Urtext may also mean-
- A seminal, or prototypical example of an artistic genre or the basis of an ideological movement in the humanities and social sciences.[note 1]
- Urtext edition in classical music, the version of the music as it was created by the composer
- Urtext in Biblical Studies, the text that is believed to precede both the Septuagint and the Masoretic text.
