Urmia University (Persian: دانشگاه ارومیه) (also known as University of Urmia) is a public university in the city of Urmia, West Azarbaijan province,Iran. The university has five campuses, seven faculties, more than 14,000 students, and exclusive research centers in Microelectronic, Antenna and Microwave Laboratory, NanoTechnology, MEMS, and Artimia. The university also has two satellite campuses in Khoy and Miyandoab city. Nazlu campus of Urmia University is the biggest university campus in northwest of Iran. Urmia University is considered one of Iran's "Grade A" universities by Iranian Ministry of Science.
History
Early accounts
The university was founded by Joseph Cochran as a medical school in 1878. He is also often credited for founding Iran’s "first contemporary medical college".[1]
The website of Urmia University credits Cochran for "lowering the infant mortality rate in the region" and for founding one of Iran's first modern hospitals (Westminister Hospital) in Urmia. The medical faculty Cochran established was joined by several other Americans, namely Drs. Wright, Homlz, van Nourdon, and Miller. They lived for whole of their life in Urmia.

There they lie in peace away from their homeland, and the testimonial epitaphs on their tombs signify their endeavor and devotion to humanity.
The later developments (1965-)
The base for current state of Urmia University is established in 1965, when agricultural college of Rezaeiye is established. Mr. Shabani was appointed as the first consular of university. In 1969, the animal science department, and department of science are established. With the new developments the complex entitled University of Rezaeye. After revolution in 1979, the name of the university is changed to Urmia University.[2]
The Urmia University of Medical Sciences detached from the main school in 1985. [3]
Campuses
The main campus of Urmia University is in Urmia, Iran. It is close to the Iran-Turkey international sero border, which is the symbol of open doors to European union. This university has six campuses in Urmia and West Azarbayjan state. Nazlou Campus is the most important of these; it embraces the majority of the faculties in a vast area.
Urmia University has five main campuses:

- City Campus (Inside Urmia city)

- School of Engineering Campus (1.5th km of Serow road)
