University of Prague

The University of Prague (in English) generally refers to either:

• Charles University in Prague. Founded in 1347. From 1622 to 1882 this university was named Universitas Carlo Ferdinandea (in Latin). Beginning in 1882 it was called Univerzita Karlo-Fernandiva (in Czech). In 1920 it changed its name to its present name Univerzita Karlova v Praze (in Czech).

• Karl-Ferdinands-Universität. In 1882 the Universitas Carlo Ferdinandea split into a Czech part and a German part. Initially the German Karl-Ferdinands-Universität was dominant but as the city of Prague became more nationalistic in the twentieth century the German part declined until it disappeared at the end of World War II.
