The University of Hyderabad also known as Hyderabad Central University is an Indian public university, largely devoted to postgraduate and doctoral studies. Founded in 1974, Prof. Gurbaksh Singh was its first Vice-Chancellor.[1] In 2012, the university was ranked seventh, ahead of the Indian Institute of Science, as published by India Today.[2]
With 46 departments and centres organised in 11 schools of study, the latest addition to the schools list is the School of Economics, inaugurated on 22 October 2012. The university has over 400 faculty and about 5000 students. It offers 150 programmes of study ranging from doctoral studies to Masters level degrees, as well as post graduate diplomas and short term courses through the distance mode. It has a 5-year Integrated Masters Programme.[3]
The university hosts an ever increasing number of foreign scholars. UoH has been recognised through a number of awards: PURSE, given by the Prime Minister of India, a grading of A, which is the highest, by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).[4][5]
The campus has 24 hours surveillance and is connected on 1 Gbit/s NKN connectivity, and is Wi-fi enabled. The Indira Gandhi Memorial Library has 350,000 books and other reference materials, and subscribes to about 600 foreign journals and 18,000 online journals and 10 online databases. The library is computerised, with software for visually-challenged students, and operates through the week.[6] The campus is also equipped with solar power source.[7]
Overview
The university imparts knowledge, in the Basic Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical Science, Engineering Science, the Social Sciences, the Humanities, Arts, Fine Arts, Media Studies and Communication. In addition, traditional subjects like Folklore Studies, Health Psychology, Dalit Studies, Women’s Studies, Neural and Cognitive Sciences are also taught.[8]
The faculty of the UoH have been recipients of major national and international awards- the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize of the CSIR, the Ramon Magasaysay Award, the J C Bose Fellowship of the DST, the Humboldt Prize, the TWAS Awards, the British Council, Commonwealth and Fulbright awards, and the Padma Awards of the Government of India also nominated for Marie Curie People in Specific Subject.
Several of the UH faculty belong to major national and international academies - the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), the National Academy of Sciences of India(NASI), the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), the Sahitya Akademi, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS).[9]
Institutions on the campus include the C R Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (AIMSCS), the Association of Management Development Institutions of South Asia (AMDISA) and the Institute of Life Sciences (ILS). A cluster of neighbouring institutions contribute to the academic environment. These include the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), The Energy Resources Institute (TERI), and the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB).[10]

School of Life Sciences (SLS)

Each department offers MSc and PhD programmes of study. Under the Distance Education Programme, the school participates in two postgraduate Diplomas in Environmental Management and in Medicinal Botany. In addition, Department of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics also offers Integrated PhD Programme and M.tech in Bioinformatics.
- Centre for Advanced Studies status
The University Grants Commission has upgraded Phase III of UGC-Special Assistance, DSA programme (period 2002-2007) and sanctioned the status of Centre for Advanced Studies (UGC-SAP-CAS-I) in the School of Life Sciences for a period of five years (2008–2013). School of Management Studies
The School of Management Studies (SMS) opened in May 1999. It offers an AICTE approved two-year full-time residential MBA, MBA (Healthcare & Hospital Management) programme and a Ph.D. programme in Management Studies.
It promotes faculty and doctoral research, consultancy, training, and outreach activities. The school has an academic partnership with the College of Business Administration, San Diego State University (SDSU), USA, and National University of Singapore. Admission to the MBA programme is through the Common Admission Test conducted by the IIM.
School of Mathematics and statistics
The School of Mathematics and Statistics was formed in Jan 2013. Prof. S. Kumaresan is the first dean of the school. Earlier this school used to be referred as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. That was a part of the School of Mathematics and Computer/Information sciences, which was established in February 1978 with Prof. M. Venkata Raman, formerly Head, Department of Mathematics, Madurai University, as the first dean of that school. There are 20 faculty members and 2 visiting faculty with research specialisation cutting across the broad areas of Algebra, Analysis, Geometry, Algebraic geometry, Number theory, Fluid mechanics, Partial Differential Equations, Statistics and Operation Research.
The department has research collaborations with institutes in India and abroad, these include research institutes like TIFR, IMSc., ISI and IISc. The DST has selected this department under its FIST (Funds for Infrastructure in Science and Technology) (Level II) scheme. The grant supports research in Cryptology, Modelling & Simulation and Dynamical Systems. The department has been chosen by the UGC for support under COSIST (Committee for Strengthening Infrastructure in Science & Technology) programme. It is a recipient of the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) of the UGC and it has completed three levels successfully.
School of Computer & Information Sciences
The School of Computer and Information Sciences offers post-graduate teaching and research programmes in all major areas of Computing, Information Science and Artificial Intelligence. The department offers an MTech programs in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and in Information Technology with specialisation in Banking Technology and Information Security.
The School of Computer and Information Sciences attained its distinct identity in January 2013. However, prior to its formation, it was functioning as a Department of Computer and Information Sciences of the School of Mathematics and Computer - Information Sciences since 1983, one of the first Computer Science departmens in the country. The School maintains contacts with industry and research labs and participates in developing systems. The Department of Science and Technology, government of India, has recognised the Department’s research contribution by funding it under FIST program.
The faculty actively pursue research in several areas that include Artificial Intelligence, Parallel & Grid Computing, Machine Learning, Logic, Cognition, Natural Language Engineering, Image Processing, color Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Computer Vision, Computer Networks, Cryptography, Speech Processing, etc.
The department research projects (funded by INCOIS, MIT, UGC, ISRO, DRDO, MHA, DST etc.) include Content-Based Image Retrieval, Natural Language and Speech Processing, Grid Computing, Neural Networks, Formal Methods in Software Engineering, Business Process Re-engineering, Forensic Document Analysis and System Security.
The School is considered as one of the finest and popular Schools on campus.

Department of English
The department provides instruction and performs research in both traditional and current areas of English Studies. In addition to core English Literature and American Literature components, it encourages work in New Literatures in English, Comparative Studies, Translation, Culture, Language Studies and Pedagogy.
The department is supported by a UGC-DRS (SAP) programme which is now in its third phase. The UGC has sanctioned the programme, “Assistance for Strengthening of Infrastructure for Humanities and Social Sciences (ASIHSS)” for five years, beginning 1 April 2006. The department has xerox machines, audio-visual equipment, and a substantial text-book library built up purely on the strength of donations from faculty, students and other well-wishers.
Department of Philosophy
The department has been recognised by the UGC as a Department of Special Assistance since 1987. The areas of research under this programme are Philosophy of Language - Indian and Western, and Cognitive Science (including Logic and Philosophy of Mind). The department has received grants under ASIHSS for a period of five years since April 2006 to March 2011. The areas under this scheme are Philosophy of Science, and Moral and Political Philosophy – both from Indian and Western Perspectives. In addition to these, the department carries on research in Philosophy of Wittgenstein, Contemporary Western Philosophy, and systems of Indian Philosophy like Nyaya and Buddhism.
Department of Hindi
The Department of Hindi provides teaching and research facilities in Hindi.
Department of Telugu
The Department of Telugu promotes studies in Telugu language and literature. The department undertakes teaching and research in Telugu with emphasis on historical and comparative studies in language and literature.
Department of Urdu
The Department of Urdu places emphasis on education in Urdu.
Department of Sanskrit Studies
Sanskrit is a repository of knowledge of Ancient Indian Heritage. A research oriented Department of Sanskrit Studies was established in 2006 which will act as an interface between Sanskrit and the sub-fields of the Humanities, Social Sciences and the Sciences.
- The department offers
- Ph.D. programme in Sanskrit Studies. While the present focus is on Language Technologies, the department encourages research in Sanskrit Studies in other disciplines such as Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Ayurveda. The programme extends over a minimum period of two years from the date of confirmation of admission.
- M.Phil. programme in Shabdabodha Systems and Language Technologies is a two semester course. The first semester consists of course work with a minimum of 16 credits. In the second semester the student carries out research under faculty guidance. leading to a dissertation.
Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies
The Centre for Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies was created as a research centre in 1988, and established a postgraduate teaching programme in 1990. It specialises in language interface studies with an emphasis on Language Technology (for which a Special Assistance Programme has been sanctioned by UGC from 2002 to 2007), translation studies, lexicography, language planning and language teaching.
The center has three projects on language technology and machine translation funded by MCIT, the government of India and UPE. The department has specialised faculty members in the atreas of formal syntax and semantics, historical linguistics, stylistics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics as well as specialists in ancient and modern Indian and foreign languages, such as Sanskrit, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Bengali and Russian.[11]
Centre for Comparative Literature
The Centre for Comparative Literature has functioned since 1988, and provides an interface between literatures and cultures with a contemporary charge. The centre offers M.A and research programmes in M.Phil and PhD

- form alliances with and develop sensitivity to differences in cultures and traditions;

The school offers M.A, MPhil and Ph.D in Economics, and optional subjects like Transional Economics, Law and Economics, Financial Econometrics, and Health Economics.

The Departments of Economics, Political Science and Sociology have been recognised by the University Grants Commission for the Special Assistance Programme.
The school has a Human Rights Programme functioning under the auspices of the Political Science Department and the Centre for Indian Diaspora. The School of Social Sciences also has an interdisciplinary Women’s Studies Cell which takes up research projects on gender issues. An Archival Cell with the support of the UGC functions under the Department of History for the preservation of rare and valuable manuscripts. The Department of Anthropology has developed a museum as a teaching aid for students.
From 2007 the School of Social Sciences started a Five Year Integrated Programme in Social Sciences leading to masters degree in Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology. For the first three years the students admitted to the programme did courses offered by departments in the School and other schools in the university. At the end of three years students branch out to departments of Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology after fulfilling the credit requirement.
Department of History
The Department of History offers courses leading to M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D Degrees. Its teaching programme provides students with an overview of world history narrowing down to focus on the history of India.
Department of Political Science
Twenty faculty work in the department. The student-teacher ratio is 9:1. It has a Special Assistance Programme, supported by the UGC, in International Relations and Political Theory. The Human Rights programme and the North East India programme are supported by the UPE project.
The department offers courses leading to M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees. The department has a faculty and student exchange programme with Uppsala University, Sweden.
Department of Sociology
The Department has had a Special Assistance Programme (DRS-II) supported by the UGC, in the areas of social identities, globalisation and the idea of 'public space'. This has been upgraded to DSA-I status (2007–2012), with a focus on themes of globalisation and public and public space.
Department of Anthropology
The Department of Anthropology started in 1988. It imparts training in theoretical and applied research in Anthropology, which equips students to meet the academic challenges in urban/rural/tribal field studies. Apart from studying ethnographic diversity, the department is oriented towards application of anthropological knowledge to the understanding of social problems and development issues. The department has developed a small museum as a teaching aid for students.
Centre for Regional Studies
The Centre for Regional Studies conducts research in the Deccan and other regions of India. The research programmes encompass ecological and environmental studies; regional historical processes; regional social structure; regional economics and development studies. The centre promotes studies in the fields of geography, cultural anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, and socio‑economic history of regions.
Centre for Folk Culture Studies
The Centre for Folk Culture Studies is the first of its kind in the Central University system in India. It was established with the assistance of the Ford Foundation, USA. The centre runs research and teaching in Folk Culture Studies in the milieu of contemporary ethnographic fieldwork.
Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora
The Centre for the Study of Indian Diaspora was established under the Area Studies Programme of the UGC in 1996 to carry out research on overseas Indians who today constitutes more than 20 million spread over hundred countries. The centre researches the historical context of the Indian Diaspora, civilizational heritage of diasporic communities, continuities and transformation in culture, economy and political life, besides promoting communication and linkages between India and the Indian diaspora. India has the second largest diaspora in the world.
Center for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy
The UGC has supported the creation of The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy. Prof Sudhakar Rao was founder director of the centre. It provides research programmes for the students. Professor Krishna Reddy heads the centre.
Center for Knowledge Culture and Innovation Studies
The Centre for Knowledge, Culture and Innovation Studies was established in 2007.
Centre for Human Rights
- The Centre for Human Rights was established in 2007. The objectives are
- explore the avenues to incorporate emerging human concerns in the domain of Social Sciences,
- stimulate debates on human rights concepts and practices as to arrive at a better philosophical and theoretical understanding of the subject,
- conduct studies to gain an insight into the nature of violations and the deeper underlying socio-economic processes and the laws that govern the phenomenon,
- build documentation to help scholars engaged in research on Human Rights.
Centre for Gandhian Economic Thought
The Centre for Gandhian Economic Thought was established by the university in 2008. Gandhi’s thought illuminates many fields of human activity – his vision also extends to an understanding of a “superior” mode of economic organisation.
Centre for Ambedkar Studies
The “Centre for Ambedkar Studies” was established in April 2010 with the approval of the University Executive Council, under the School of Social Sciences. The centre explores the multiple dimensions of Ambedkar’s thought, to give it its place within the academic curriculum of social and human sciences. It studies the historical and political dimension of Ambedkar’s thought within the larger scheme of Indian social and political thought. The department involves in its work the departments of Anthropology, History, Economics, Sociology, and Political Science and also human sciences: Philosophy and Literature.
Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication
The Sarojini Naidu School of Arts and Communication began in 1988 and offers Masters-level courses in Dance, Theatre Arts, Painting and Communication and Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in Communication, Theatre Arts, and Dance.

The Ph.D. programmes mainly consist of a research project with some course work if necessary and the writing of a thesis.
Department of Theatre Arts
This Department of Theatre Arts offers two major courses. One is a three years Post Graduate programme in Theatre Arts and the other is a Doctoral programme. Apart from offering the courses, the Department has initiated a Theatre Outreach Unit, in August 2012, to make a build bridges between theatre pedagogy and practice with a focused intervention into the Telugu theatre practice.
Theatre Outreach Unit
Theatre Outreach Unit, has been set by the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Hyderabad. Its aim is to engage with Theatre practice outside institutional parameters in such a way that there is a continuous flow of skills and knowledge in the field of theatre between academic study and practice in the field. Dr.Ramarao Peddi who has been working with Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University is deputed and appointed as the Coordinator of this project.
School of Medical Sciences
With the rapid progress in the area of medical sciences and its relevance to Biology, Physics and Chemistry, the establishment of a School of Medical Sciences, has become all the more important than before. This school would undertake teaching and research in the frontier areas of medicine and health sciences. The courses to be offered are in medicine and allied sciences, such as health and nutrition. The School would interact and would be benefited by the existing schools of Life Sciences, Chemistry and Physics.
Centre for Physical Fitness and Sports Sciences
The Centre for Physical Fitness and Sports Sciences has been established under the school. The centre offers admission for one year full-time Postgraduate Diploma in Health Fitness and Life Style Management from 2008.
School of Engineering Sciences & Technology
The School of Engineering Sciences & Technology (SEST) was established with the objective "to pursue high quality research and impart research-led education in emerging multi-disciplinary areas encompassing science, engineering and technology". SEST started functioning from 2008 by initiating an integrated M.Tech./Ph.D. programme in Materials Engineering. Integrated M.Tech/Ph.D programme in Nano Science and Technology commenced in 2010. Direct Ph.D. programme in Materials Engineering and Nano Science and Technology have also been initiated. SEST provides an environment to pursue cross-disciplinary research in engineering sciences and technology by taking advantage of the facilities and expertise available with schools of study at the university, particularly Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics & Computer/Information Sciences and Life Sciences. SEST offers courses/research projects in collaboration with these schools as well as the Centre for Nanotechnology (CFN), Advance Centre for Research on High Energy Materials (ACRHEM), Centre for Modeling, Simulation and Design (CMSD) and Central Instrumentation Laboratory (CIL) on campus.
Study India Program
The university Study in India Program (SIP), which began in 1998 with 8 students, has expanded so that there were 146 participants in programs during the 2007-08 academic year. The number was 167 in 2006-2007.
Courses that have been taken by SIP students include Indian Diaspora, Women's Studies, Folk Culture Studies, Religious Studies, Indian Philosophy, Indian Dance, Indian Music, Indian Cinema, Art, Literature, Indian Politics and Foreign Policy, Linguistics, Communication Technologies, Anthropology, Indian History, Mathematics, etc. Basic and advanced language courses like Hindi, Telugu, Urdu, Sanskrit, and other Indian languages are also offered.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Library
The university library is a central facility to support teaching and research activities of the University. The library has a collection of more than three lakhs books and monographs in Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts, Communication and Management Studies. It subscribes to around 650 periodicals, popular magazines and newspapers in English and Indian languages. The library provides access to 18,000 full-text e-journals from several publishers. The activities of the library are automated with VTLS-Virtua LMS, including a web OPAC.
Centre for Integrated Studies
The university started the 5 year Integrated Program in 2006. It offers a 5 year Integrated Master’s Degree courses in several subjects for boys and girls on completion of their +2 level of education.
Courses offered by the Centre: Five year integrated Master’s Degree courses in Science, Humanities and Social Science subjects. It is a course that combines pregraduate and postgraduate studies.
Center for Neural and Cognitive Sciences
The Center for Neural and Cognitive Sciences is a research center focusing upon the areas of linguistic cognition and cognitive systems. It brings together faculty and researchers from disciplines such as physics, linguistics, computer science, neurobiology and philosophy to ponder upon the nature of cognition. The center is setting up a laboratory with supercomputing, ERP/EEG, invivo elelctrophysiology and eye-tracking equipment, and offers research programs in neural and cognitive sciences at the M.Phil. and Doctoral levels. The center has been offering post-graduate courses at the interface of linguistics, philosophy and neurosciences for students majoring in the sciences and the humanities. It has received assistance from the University Grants Commission towards major research projects and infrastructural facilities under their Innovative Programs Scheme. The center is on the network of the National Initiative of the Department of Science and Technology on Cognitive Science Research and has received substantial grants from them.
Placement Guidance and Advisory Bureau
The Placement and Counselling Centre gives out information about employment opportunities and makes information available about higher education in India and other countries. Placement talks are arranged and facilities are provided for campus interviews. Students have been able to secure jobs through placement in some of the multinational companies, gvernment agencies etc.
Dean Students’ Welfare
The office of the Dean, Students’ Welfare (DSW), looks after the welfare of the students with support from the elected representatives of the students, faculty and administration. There is a students’ union which caters to the students’ interests and promotes cultural, literary and sports activities. Elections to the Students Union are conducted by the students themselves.
Student Activities
Sukoon(सुकून)
'Sukoon' is an annual cultural meet for the university students. Organised by the Students' Union, it is held in the March at the Open Dias. 'Sukoon'(सुकून) means 'Peace'. In this colourful event, many competitions are held for and by the students, like 'Mr.& Ms.Sukoon Competition', Rangoli, Shayari, Quiz, Antaakshari, Debate in English-Telugu-Hindi-Urdu, Dance, Singing, Spot Painting, etc. Other events like DJ night, Quawali, traditional folk musical events, etc. are organised.
Canteen and Refreshments
There are 18 hostels (ten for men and eight for women) for students to stay in. There is a shopping complex, along with two other canteens inside the campus for students, one of which is run by a gentleman named Swami Ji. A health care center is on the campus for the needs of students.
DST auditorium for seminar and showing films. There is a students union which acts as a forum for students to raise their issues with the administration.
National Service Scheme Cell (NSS)
In connection with 'Gandhi Jayanti Week' Celebrations National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell, organises Peace March, Orientation Programmes, Tree plantation etc. during the first week of October every year.
Student Organisations
Some major student organisations represented on the campus are the Ambedkar Students' Association (ASA),Dalit Students' Union (DSU),Bahujan students' front(BSF),Telangana Students' Association (TSA), Akhila Bharathiya Vidyarthi Parishad(ABVP), National Students' Union of India(NSUI), Students' Federation of India (SFI). SFI had won the elections for Students Union 2012-13.
Entrepreneurship Development Cell
The university has an ED Cell, located in the Management Block of the university, that has nurtured startups. Some of them include.[12]
Extracurricular Activities
Some of these activities are held by the university authorities, and the rest by the students. Sukoon is an annual cultural festival where students from colleges all over Hyderabad participate. Annual sports competitions are held in various disciplines. Festivals like Diwali, Dussera, Ramzan, Easter, Christmas and other regional specific festivals are celebrated by student communities. The university has three guest houses, namely Visiting scholars, Lakeview and Jubilee Guest houses.
