The University of Craiova (Universitatea din Craiova in Romanian) is a university located in Craiova, Romania.

The university is one of the most advanced in Romania, it offers 3-year short term as well as 4-5 year long term teaching programs and MA and doctoral post-graduate studies in more than 30 fields and 90 specializations.[1] The university has over 1,000 teaching staff, and 22,000 students, this places the University of Craiova among the five largest universities in Romania.[2] It comprises 17 faculties and two colleges, offering candidates training in fields of higher education.

History

In 1947, it was founded by the Faculty of Agronomy that was a year later developed within the Agronomic Institute of Craiova (comprising, during the time, Faculties of Agriculture and Agricultural Machines, and Faculty of Horticulture). From 1951 to 1958, an Institute of Machines and Electrical Equipment provided engineering courses in Craiova.[3]

In 1959, the foundation of the Pedagogical Institute of Craiova established four faculties: of Philology, Mathematics, Physics-Chemistry, and of Natural Sciences.[3]

On 27 August 1965, by a decree of the Council of Ministers of Romania, the Agronomic Institute and the Pedagogical Institute were united under a new institution, University of Craiova. Respectively, it encompassed the faculties of Mathematics, Chemistry, Philology, Economics, Electrotechnics, Agriculture, and Horticulture which were unified under the same administration.[4]

The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1970 (which separated, in 1998, to form the University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Craiova).[5] In 1974, by the union of Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, the Faculty of Natural Sciences was founded. The Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics was founded in 1991 by the union of the Department of Mathematics and Department of Informatics of the former Faculty of Natural Sciences.

Physics teaching in Craiova began in 1959 when the "Physics-Chemistry section" was founded in the Teaching Institute. It provided 3 years of study in regular classes. Since September 1966, this section was integrated into the University of Craiova, as the "Physics and Chemistry specialty", providing 5 years of study, in regular classes. In 1971, a precisely focused section was founded: the Physics Section, providing 4 to 5 years of study, in regular classes. The number of students allowed to this Section was given the limit of 30, by that time. The usual syllabus was four years, but the best among the graduates were enabled to continue their study for the 5-th speciality year. In 1974, the Physics, Mathematics, Informatics and the ancient "Physics and Chemistry" (that was still going on since 1959) section gathered under the name Faculty of Natural Sciences. This structure kept on functioning till 1990. By then, the Faculty changed its name, becoming the "Faculty of Sciences", inside of which are the Physics, Chemistry (separated), and Geography-Geo-Ecology (gathered) specialities.

By 1991, the university consisted of two colleges: one in Craiova and another in Drobeta-Turnu Severin. The college in Craiova comprises four specializations: Technology, Economics, Informatics and Secretarial work. The college in Drobeta-Turnu Severin comprises two specializations: Administration and Informatics. During the '90s decade, all the faculties of the University developed, enriching their profiles and specializations. The academic year 1989 started with 7 faculties and 16 specializations. In the academic year 1996, it has grown to 14 faculties and 56 specializations. The colleges in Craiova and Drobeta-Turnu Severin offer 18 specializations.[6]
