The University Daily Kansan is an editorially and financially independent student newspaper serving the University of Kansas. It was founded in 1904. Its distribution is currently only within the university's campus. It is published daily during the spring and fall semesters and weekly during the summer months. Its circulation is about 12,000.[1] The Kansan also includes a weekly lifestyle magazine named Jayplay.

Its online counterpart, Kansan.com, began operation on the Web in Fall 1996. Originally called the UDKi (for interactive) it adopted the naming convention of its parent publication three years later.

Kelly Stroda, a senior from Salina, was the Fall 2011 editor-in-chief. The revenue generated by The Kansan's award-winning advertising staff (named best in the nation by CIMBAM 2011) pays for a staff of many managers (both ad and editorial) and editors. The full staff includes more than 150 students.[2]

The newspaper earned the prestigious Newspaper Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press in 1993, 1994, 1995, 2000, 2004 and 2005. The Kansan was a finalist for the award in 2001 and 2007. Kansan.com, the newspaper's online counterpart, won the Online Pacemaker in 2007, 2008 and 2009.[3]

In the summer of 2010, The Kansan moved out of Stauffer-Flint Hall, where it had been operating for more than 50 years, into the Dole Human Development Center, to accompany KUJH-TV in the Stauffer Memorial Newsroom, in the second floor of the center.

In 2012, the University Daily Kansan was named Best Newspaper in the Nation by College Newspaper Business & Advertising Managers for second year in a row. [4]
