Plot
It is the early 20th century. Raishin Akabane is a student puppeteer from Japan who has come to the Walpurgis Royal Academy of Machine Arts in England to study the emerging field of Machinart: a combination of magic and technology with military applications. He is accompanied by a girl named Yaya, who is actually his Automaton: a living machine doll powered by magical circuits specialized in hand-to-hand combat. In the Academy, there is a combat tournament exclusive to the Top 100 students and their automata, to decide who shall be bestowed with the title of "Wiseman", the greatest puppeteer.
Characters
Main characters
- Raishin Akabane (赤羽 雷真 Akabane Raishin)
- Voiced by: Hiro Shimono
- The main protagonist, he is a puppetmaster from Japan whose lack of talent was shunned by the rest of his family until they are killed by a mysterious assailant. Seeking clues about his family's murderer, Raishin enrolls at the Walpurgis Machinart Academy determined to attain the title of "Wiseman" as he believes that one of the other students may be the culprit. He is known as the "Second Last" for having the 2nd worst grades at the academy entrance exam. He later secures a spot as the 100th ranked student to enter the Evening Party for the title of Wiseman.
- Yaya (夜々)
- Voiced by: Hitomi Harada
- Raishin's automaton, she was assembled by Karyusai Shouko using both mechanical and organic parts, making her a "banned doll". On his way to Walpurgis Machinart Academy, Raishin and his automaton Yaya stop a runaway train. Upon arriving at the academy, Raishin gets the name Second Last for having the second lowest grades at the academy. Despite his grades Raishin is determined to fight in the festival, an automaton fighting tournament in which only the students with the top 100 grades are allowed to participate in, and win to obtain the title Wiseman. Raishin encounters Charlotte and challenges her to a battle against her automaton Sigmund, but the battle gets interrupted by other students. Raishin and Yaya defeat the students with ease, and after noticing that Sigmund was badly injured, Raishin withdraws from his battle with Charlotte. The next day, Raishin tells Charlotte that he wants the Wiseman title so that he can obtain the forbidden techniques and use them to get revenge. During the conversation, Raishin spots Magnus passing by and confronts him.
2 | "Facing "Cannibal Candy" II" | October 14, 2013 |
Knowing that he would lose in a battle given the extreme differences in skill level, Raishin gives Magnus a small urn instead of challenging him to a battle. Raishin is asked by Felix, the discipline committee chief, to eliminate an unknown entity known as Cannibal Candy for destroying many automatons and causing 26 students to disappear. In exchange, Raishin is given entry into the festival. Charlotte asks Raishin to go on a date, and he accepts much to Yaya's dismay. On the date, Charlotte confesses to Raishin that she committed a terrible sin in the past. Raishin and Charlotte end the night going to another Cannibal Candy crime scene.
3 | "Facing "Cannibal Candy" III" | October 21, 2013 |
At the crime scene, Raishin and Charlotte run into Felix, who scares Charlotte away. Back at the dorms, Raishin gives Yaya a pair of boots and tells her that he went out with Charlotte to confirm that she is not Cannibal Candy. Raishin receives a phone call from Lisette that Charlotte went missing from her dorm. Shoko makes a visit to the dorms with Irori and Komurasaki. Shoko tells Raishin that automatons are not humans and recalls the time she found Raishin. Lisette calls Raishin out to enter an automaton laboratory, where Raishin discovers that Lisette's corpse is being preserved in Felix's locker and that the Lisette that he had been talking to is actually a banned automaton. Outside the laboratory, Charlotte defeats an automaton, but it is a trap set by Felix to frame her as Cannibal Candy. Charlotte figures out that Felix is Cannibal Candy. Felix is about to kill Charlotte until an injured Raishin and Yaya arrive.
4 | "Facing "Cannibal Candy" IV" | October 28, 2013 |
Raishin and Yaya learn about Charlotte's past from Sigmund. Charlotte's family was distinguished for making automatons, but the family was stripped of everything when a boy of high social status was injured by one of her automatons. Thus Charlotte is attending school on a scholarship in order to reunite her family. Lisette is revealed to be Felix's automaton Eliza and is capable of transforming into mist. Yaya is able to defeat Eliza when her blood was spilled by Eliza's attack to decrease the effectiveness of Eliza's mist magic as only one type of magic could be utilized at a time. Following the battle, Raishin is allowed to participate in the festival despite his poor grades, and Charlotte gives Raishin a pendant with defensive capabilities as a gift for clearing her name.
