The Ukrainian League Cup (Ukrainian: Кубок Ліги) was a knockout cup competition in Ukrainian football, run by the Professional Football League of Ukraine. In the beginning the tournament was named the Cup of the Second League. After the 2000-01 season was decided to withdraw from the tournament. In 2009, the tournament was reactivated and renamed into the League Cup. In 2010 the tournament again abandoned.

Format

The format of this competition fluctuated insignificantly. It consisted of a qualification round that was followed by the first round, 1/16 of final. Initially all rounds from the first to semi-finals consisted of two games, home-away basis, later it changed with only one game played from the randomly chosen field of the participated clubs. Mainly the competition was limited to clubs that were competing in the Second League. Also later semifinalists were allowed to enter the Ukrainian Cup also. The winner and runner-up of the competition were awarded a qualification to the Ukrainian Cup in 2000 and 2001.

In 2009-2010 season, the Cup began with a group tournament where teams from Druha Liha and amateur level competitors participated. At this stage all 24 teams were divided into eight groups. The best two teams out of each group advanced to the next round of the competition (Second Round) while all the last placed participants were eliminated. In the Second Round teams were paired with each other with the winners of each group playing at home. The winner of each pair advanced to the next round (Quarter-finals). The Quarter-finals took place in the same manner. The Semi-finals consisted of two home-away matches, while the Final took place at a neutral field. The winners of this competition were awarded the Cup and the prize money (150,000 Hryvnia) from Umbro, the general sponsor of the event.

History

The competition with name Cup of the Second League began in 1999/2000 season by the PFL, but after the second season 2000/2001 decided to abandon them. The competition was discontinued as it showed to be lacking the true strive for victory from the clubs that participated. It was lacking popularization and was also considered to be more costly as almost no spectators were attending the games of that competition.

In 2009, in order to increase the number of matches for the Second Division clubs (26 clubs were divided into two groups) the tournament was reactivated. Also invited to the tournament, some amateur clubs. The tournament was renamed into the League Cup. In 2010 the tournament again abandoned.
