Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) is a private university in Uganda. The main campus is in Nkozi, a small town, approximately 84 kilometres (52 mi), by road, west of Kampala, the capital and largest city in Uganda, on the Kampala-Masaka Highway.[1] The coordinates of the university campus are 00 00 18N, 32 00 54E (Latitude: 0.0050; Longitude: 32.0150).[2]
History
The university was established in October 1993 with 84 students and two academic departments: the Institute of Ethics & Development Studies and the Faculty of Business Administration & Management.[3] Today, the university consists of seven faculties, one institute, four centers, five departments and two schools. As of October 2010, total student enrollment is in excess of 4,600. Of these, about 1,200 students are residential, while nearly 3,700 students are enrolled in UMU's distance learning programs. The number of staff members is over 300.[4]
Campuses
As of October 2010, Uganda Martyrs University maintains campuses at the following locations:[5]
- Main Campus: At Nkozi, about 84 kilometres (52 mi) southwest of Kampala, on the highway between Kampala and Masaka.
- Lubaga Campus: At Lubaga, in Lubaga Division, within the city limits of Kampala, on 3 acres (1.2 ha) of land. This campus houses the School of Diplomacy.[6]
- Nsambya Campus: On the grounds of St. Francis Hospital Nsambya, on Nsambya Hill, in Makindye Division, in southern Kampala. This campus houses the newly created Uganda Martyrs University School of Medicine which, in 2010, started offering the Master of Medicine degree in General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.[7]
- Kabale Campus: In the southwestern Ugandan city of Kabale
- Moyo Campus: In the town of Moyo, in Northern Uganda, close to the border with Southern Sudan.
- Mbale Campus: In Mbale, in Eastern Uganda, at the foothills of Mount Elgon.
- Soroti Campus: In the town of Soroti, in Eastern Uganda.
- Mbarara Campus: In the city of Mbarara, in Western Uganda, approximately 295 kilometres (183 mi) by road, west of Kampala.
- Lira Campus: In Lira, in Northern Uganda, approximately 270 kilometres (170 mi), by road, north of Kampala.[8]
- Kisubi Campus: At Kisubi, Wakiso District, the campus offers Bachelors degrees in Education.[9]
