Tzum (West Frisian: Tsjom) is a small village in Franekeradeel in the province Friesland of the Netherlands and has about 1167 inhabitants (2004).

History

Renier van Tzum was born in the village. He was the opperhoofd or chief factor of the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC) in Siam (1643-1644).[citation needed] He was also VOC opperhoofd in Japan (1644-1646).[1]
