tyDi (born Tyson Illingworth) is an International Dance Music Award (IDMA) award winning Australian song writer, music producer and DJ. Born and raised on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, tyDi was discovered as an artist in his mid-teens. After a rapid rise in the dance music world he was signed to Armin Van Buuren’s Armada label at just 17, he was crowned Australia’s No.1 DJ for the first time in 2008 – the youngest ever winner of this award. He went back-to-back with the title in 2009.

After graduating from high school tyDi studied at the prestigious Conservatorium of Music where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music Technology.[1] In 2009, he released his eagerly anticipated debut album, Look Closer, which reached #2 on the Australian Dance charts. A year later he won ‘Best Break-Through DJ’ at the 2010 International Dance Music Awards in Miami, awarded personally by none other than dance heavyweight Tiesto.[2]

After two years of travelling the world and developing his sound, tyDi released his second album 'Shooting Stars' in 2011, a production that crossed genres, featured numerous collaborations and reached No.1 on the Australian, Canadian, Finish and UK iTunes Dance Charts as well as No.4 in the USA. For the past four years straight tyDi has been ranked well inside the top 100 DJs in the annual DJ Mag Top 100 poll.[3][4][5][6]

In October 2012 tyDi signed a worldwide publishing deal with Rondor/Universal Music and signed his first major label record deal with Universal Republic Records in April 2013.[citation needed] His latest album, a chillout album called Hotel Rooms was released 22 November 2013, with the eagerly anticipated follow up to Shooting Stars, entitled Redefined, set for release in early 2014. [7][8]

History

The Early Years

tyDi was born and raised in Mooloolaba, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The youngest of four children (he has three older sisters) his love of dance music didn’t materialise until his mid-teens.

Introduced to dance music by some older friends when he was 14, he instantly fell in love with it – particularly trance music.[9] While he expressed a desire to become a DJ, his parents weren’t happy with his career choice and bought him a drum kit in the hope he would learn a real instrument. It only took a few short months before tyDi had traded in his drum kit for his first set of turntables.[10] By 2003, at just 16-years-old, he found himself entering in DJ competitions using tydi - a nickname he had picked up during high school - as his DJ moniker. A printing mistake on a promotional flyer for the Brisbane DJ Wars in that year sealed his stage name with a capital D and tyDi was born. His win at the Brisbane DJ Wars provided the launch pad for his rapid ascension into the world of dance music. His dedication to musical theory was evident early with almost every lunch time at high school spent in the music room writing music.

A year after graduating from high school he was touring Australia almost every weekend and quickly building a big fan base. In 2006 he entered the Technics InTheMix Australian Top 50 DJs for the first time with a bullet, debuting at #12.[11] By 2007 he was starting to play the big music festivals and his increased exposure was rewarded with the #4 spot on the Top 50 DJ charts.[12]

The following year, 2008, he was crowned Australia's No.1 DJ, the youngest ever and first non-NSW winner of the award.[13]

His original inspiration for song writing came from a high school relationship. After three years together his girlfriend left him to study in France. "I was really upset and it inspired me to write some songs, and these songs did really well and they helped me to get where I am now" he said in a 2009 interview with Indonesia Clubbing.com.[10]

Look Closer

Not long after being crowned Australia’s No.1 DJ, tyDi released his eagerly anticipated debut album "Look Closer". It featured 15 predominantly trance tracks but also illustrated his musical range with deviations from the trance genre on tracks such as "Interlude", "Let You Go" and "How Much Longer". The album rocketed to No.2 on the Australian Dance Charts. As InTheMix put it in May 2009 "Look Closer is an absolute belter of a debut, and displays a musical maturity way beyond Tydi’s years."[14] Website Trance.nu went further saying that Look Closer was "…of world class quality the likes of some of the best trance and progressive artist albums out there."[14]

Between an IDMA Award and a Good Dream

The release of Look Closer was just the start of a huge two year period in tyDi’s career. As well as touring endlessly it marked a particularly productive period from a music release perspective. A few months after his debut album he mixed one of the discs on the annual Ministry of Sound Trance Nation releases (Above and Beyond looked after Disk 1) and was again voted Australia's No.1 DJ in the Sony In The Mix Top 50 for 2009.[15]

You Walk Away (feat. Audrey Gallagher) was the first tyDi original single released following Look Closer. It was the start of a golden run of releases that included Good Dream, Vanilla (feat. Tanya Zygar), Calling (again feat. Audrey Gallagher) and the anthem Half Light (feat. Tanya Zygar). In February 2010 tyDi was nominated for, and won, the "Best Breakthrough DJ" award at the International Dance Music Awards.[2] He was presented with the award at a ceremony in Miami by none other than dance heavyweight Tiesto. Other nominees for the award that year included Boys Noize, Chuckie, Joris Voorn and Super 8 & Tag.[16]

By 2011 the annual State of Trance (ASOT) events were a juggernaut, with tyDi making his ASOT debut at Sydney’s Acer Arena on 16 April. He would make a return appearance during ASOT 550 in Kiev, Ukraine the following year.

Shooting Stars

August 2011 saw the release of tyDi’s second artist album – Shooting Stars – to critical acclaim. It rocketed to #1 on the Australian, Canadian, UK and Finnish iTunes dance charts and reached as high as #4 on the USA iTunes dance charts. The album was a complete deviation from his trance background, highlighting his song writing and musical capabilities. The album contained 18 tracks spanning almost every genre of electronic music. It featured collaborations with some of dance music’s best vocalists in Tania Zygar, Brianna Holan, Audrey Gallagher and DJ Rap.

Talking Reviews said "For want of a better description, this musical journey is nothing short of astounding and breath taking.”[17] Meanwhile Beat Magazine saved its greatest compliment for the closing track – Ariana - saying “The final track Ariana could be rated the best album-outro of 2011, so be sure to give it a listen."[18]

Almost half of the tracks on the album have now been released in extended club mixes or remixes highlighting the longevity of the songs produced. Later that year tyDi would be voted the #48 DJ in the DJ Mag Top 100 DJ Poll – a career high.

August 2011  present

Since the release of Shooting Stars tyDi has continued his relentless touring of the world, playing around 150 shows a year from London to Macau to Sydney and his hometown of Brisbane where he still makes regular appearances.

tyDi’s first original release since Shooting Stars was Glow in the Dark, his first collaboration with Island Def Jam recording artist Kerli. The song gained radio success with over 10 radio Top 40 radio stations spinning the record and the music video received airplay on MTV's Clubland (MTV) as well as premiering on VEVO.com. The message behind the video was powerful, highlighting the positive things in life no matter how dark your days can be.

In October 2012 tyDi signed a worldwide publishing deal with Rondor/Universal Music. He signed his first major label record deal with Universal Republic Records (www.RepublicRecords.com) in April 2013. He was signed by Monte and Avery Lipman, Founder, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer of Republic Records <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Lipman>.

His latest EP "When I Go" was released in January 2013 featuring two trance tracks, a progressive house number and a chillout track as well as multiple remixes.

As well as working on his new album Redefined (due for release early 2014) and chillout album Hotel Rooms (released 22 November 2013), tyDi has been working extensively with American producer and DJ BT, an artist who has had a big influence on tyDi’s career. Together they have collaborated on two tracks featured on BT's ninth album A Song Across Wires: "Tonight" (with JES) and "Stem the Tides" (with Tania Zygar).[19]

Social Media

Aside from his music one of the things that makes tyDi so popular with his fans is accessibility through all forms of social media. As of December 2013 he had tweeted over 30,000 times and has over 80,000 followers.[20] As well as news on his latest musical journey it’s not uncommon for tyDi to tweet interesting scientific facts. On his Facebook page he has over 210,000 people watching his every move.[21] Also known for random web chats and has been known to call up fans via his Twitter feed.

Global Soundsystem podcast

Since November 2011 tyDi has been producing a weekly radio show/podcast, called Global Soundsystem. As of 5 Dec 2013 there have been 213 episodes. On 10 May 2012 the show was condensed from its original two-hour format to a one-hour show. The show is hosted by tyDi and features the latest electronic dance music from around the world.

The show is syndicated and broadcast to more than 30 countries around the world every week as well as being available for download to the general public via iTunes and more recently SoundCloud.[22]

The 50th episode surprised many with fellow DJ’s Paul Oakenfold, Judge Jules, Sasha, Sander Van Doorn and Markus Schulz all helping to celebrate the milestone.[23] His 100th episode was special in a different way with fans given the opportunity to introduce all of the tracks during the podcast.
