Tunkinsky District (Russian: Тунки́нский райо́н; Buryat: Түнхэн аймаг) is an administrative[1] and municipal[2] district (raion), one of the twenty-one in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia. It is located in the west of the republic. The area of the district is 11,791.62 square kilometers (4,552.77 sq mi).[citation needed] Its administrative center is the rural locality (a selo) of Kyren.[1] Population: 22,672 (2010 Census);[3] 24,173 (2002 Census);[6] 27,771 (1989 Census).[7] The population of Kyren accounts for 23.8% of the district's total population.[3]
