TuneIn is a privately held company based in Palo Alto, California founded as RadioTime in Dallas, Texas in 2002. TuneIn offers over 100,000 live global radio stations from every continent and has over two million on-demand programs from podcasts to concerts to interviews.[1] In August 2012, TuneIn announced that its service had 40 million monthly active listeners.[2] RadioTime’s database is updated from automatic feeds, content management staff, and user contributions. TuneIn's primary product line, dubbed TuneIn Radio, uses the Radiotime engine in a suite of mobile apps for iOS,[3][4] Android, BlackBerry,[5][6] Samsung, Windows Phone devices and the Ouya console. TuneIn raised over $47 million in venture funding from Institutional Venture Partners, Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures, General Catalyst Partners, Jafco Ventures, and ICCP Venture Partners.[7]
Function
TuneIn's website and mobile apps offer the user the ability to listen to streaming audio of thousands of radio networks and radio stations in the United States and worldwide, including AM, FM, HD, LP, digital and internet stations. Additionally, a selection of podcasts are available for streaming. TuneIn's directory carries approximately 100,000 live stations and 2,000,000 podcasts.
TuneIn Radio is available as an app on all smartphones and tablets, online at tunein.com and on over 200 platforms[8] such as Sonos, Logitech, Samsung TV, Roku, Google TV and the forthcoming Ouya[9] game console.
TuneIn's website is currently available in 22 different languages. Each language has its own version of the website with content tailored for the specific language or region.
On November 7, 2013, TuneIn Radio introduced v5.0. Promoted as being "redesigned and optimized ... for iOS 7,"[10] version 5.0 is the first release of TuneIn radio to insert advertising before playing a live audio stream. Called "preroll advertisements," many paid users are unhappy[11] with being presented advertising in a paid app.
