Transpara is an independent developer of mobile business intelligence, operations monitoring, and alerting software founded in 2005 by Michael Saucier. Its core product, Visual KPI, was originally designed for the energy and utilities, oil and gas and data center operations industries and has since expanded to include manufacturing, retail, pharmaceuticals, financial services and others.

History

Prior to starting Transpara, Michael Saucier was the founder of PID, Inc. and Sequencia Corporation. Sequencia was sold to OSIsoft LLC and after serving as OSIsoft's Vice President of Marketing he left to start Transpara. Transpara's core product, Visual KPI, was originally designed to make real-time operations data available on BlackBerry smartphones and it quickly grew to include Windows Mobile and Windows Phone, Apple's iPhone and iPad, Google's Android phones and tablets, Palm OS devices, SharePoint and more. As of 2011, Visual KPI is supported on over 500 devices.

Transpara is a certified Microsoft partner.[1]

Core product

Visual KPI is Transpara's core product. It is an enterprise software application designed for Mobile BI, operations monitoring, dashboards and alerting. Unlike traditional business intelligence products, Visual KPI does not include a data warehouse or other master data source, as it uses data from existing sources combined with metadata and delivers it to mobile devices and web browsers. Because of this, it is often included in the category of mobile dashboard software as well.

Visual KPI consists of two primary components, the Visual KPI Server and the Visual KPI Designer. The server is the core engine of the product and the only component used at run time. It reads data from multiple data sources, applies pre-defined metadata, handles security, and generates optimized dashboards in real time for each device that has requested the data. These screens include data such as KPIs, scorecards, trends, heat maps, values, links and alerts.

The Visual KPI Server is a web server. It delivers screens in the form of advanced HTML, Javascript and other web technologies to the web browsers of mobile and other devices. No software lives locally on the device.

The Visual KPI Designer is the design environment for setting up, configuring and making changes to the metadata of each Visual KPI site, or instance. It is based on Microsoft Excel and was written as an add-in using Microsoft's Visual Studio Tools for Office. All configuration and changes are done in the Visual KPI Designer in the form of data so no coding is necessary.
