Tradeshift is a web based business network and also a free invoicing platform[1] founded by Christian Lanng,[2][3][4] Mikkel Hippe Brun[5] and Gert Sylvest.[6][7] The network was launched in May 2010, and used in more than 150 countries by February 2011.[8] The project has gained media attention in online magazines, including Wired[9] and Financial Times.[10] Tradeshift's competitors include Ariba,[11] OB10, Coupa and Maventa.com.[1] In March 2012, the company released an invoice processing product called CloudScan, which aims to make sure buyers don't need to do any invoice handling work.[12] The technology-stream, that Tradeshift is following here, is known as Cloud-Invoicing and guarantees a barrier-free exchange of structured documents.

Background

The founders all have a background from the Danish public sector, where they created the world's first large scale peer-to-peer infrastructure for e-business called Easytrade. This project was nominated for the European e-gov award in 2009.[13] The founders also had leading roles (Governing board member, Technical Director) in the European Commission project PEPPOL, which is aiming to enable cross-border electronic trade inside the European Union.[5]

Team

The Tradeshift project has attracted a range of notable figures such as Morten Lund, who was the Chairman of Tradeshift (now held by CEO Christian Lanng), but still a board member, Jon Bosak, who co-created XML and is on the technical advisory board of Tradeshift, along with Mårten Mickos,[14] Stephan Glaenzer and Klaus Lovgreen as angel investors.

Funding

In May 2011, Tradeshift raised $7 million from Notion Capital.[15][16]

In October 2011, the company raised a funding of $17 million, which made the company up to a total value of $137 million,[17] from ru-Net and Kite Ventures (both of which are Moscow-based investment firms) and Notion Capital.[18]
