Tré Melvin, (born October 28, 1992), is an American actor, philanthropist, and YouTube personality. Melvin is widely known for his YouTube show, This Is A Commentary,[1] in which he varies between sketch comedy, touching base with assorted subject matters, and parodying viral videos. The channel currently boasts 2 million+ subscribers and 160 million+ video views worldwide.[2]

Background

Melvin was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Stivers School for the Arts, where he studied theatre between grades 7 through 12.[3] Melvin studied Business Marketing at the University of Cincinnati, and currently resides in Orlando, Florida. He began acting professionally at the age of twelve; performing in countless stage plays, musicals, television commercials, short films, and radio spots.

This Is A Commentary

The pilot episode of the series, Niggas These Days, premiered via Melvin's Facebook profile on October 9, 2011, and worldwide via YouTube later the same day.[4] As of October 20, 2011, in merely one week and four days, the channel reached 1,000+ subscribers and 100,000 video views as of October 28, 2011.

On June 13, 2013, in less than two years of production, the channel reached 1 million+ subscribers and 100 million+ video views. The channel currently boasts 2 million+ subscribers and 160 million+ video views worldwide.[5]

According to YouTube insight reports, This Is A Commentary is most popular in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Trinidad, Jamaica, Barbados, Bahamas, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.[6]

Philanthropy

Between December 2006 and March 2007 at age 14, Melvin conceived and operated Making A Way On Valentine's Day, a fundraiser for a local charity in his community, The Dayton Foundation. In merely a couple of months, Melvin raised $4,000 for the organization, which was placed into a grant and donated to The Salvation Army. The funds contributed to the construction of the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center located in Dayton.[7] In November 2007, Melvin received the Association of Fundraising Professionals - Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award.[8] Melvin has partaken in several similar projects since the completion of Making A Way On Valentine's Day.

On October 24, 2013, Melvin introduced the Tré L. Melvin College Scholarship,[9] making him the first YouTuber to start a college scholarship for his viewers.[10]
