Tony Humes (born 19 March 1966) is an English former footballer who played in the Football League as a central defender for Ipswich Town and Wrexham.[1][2] Since June 2009 he has been head of youth at Colchester United.
Humes was born in Blyth, Northumberland and began his playing career at Ipswich, where he made 140 appearances and scored 12 goals between 1985 and 1992.[1] A tough-tackling defender, he suffered a series of potentially career-ending injuries in that time.[citation needed] In March 1992 he signed for Wrexham for £40,000 where he played out the rest of his career, retiring in October 1999, having played more than 200 games.[1]
Following retirement from playing he worked in Wrexham's centre of excellence until August 2001[3] before joining Ipswich Town's youth academy. Promoted to academy manager in 2006 when his predecessor, Bryan Klug, became first-team coach,[4] he left the club after a review of the youth system in January 2009. He took up the post of head of youth at Colchester United in June 2009.[5]
