Tony Caterina (born March 28, 1956 in Montagano, Italy) is a business man and municipal politician from Alberta, Canada. He has served as a member of the Edmonton City Council since 2007.

Early life

Tony Caterina was born in Italy. His family moved to Canada in 1962 and settled in Edmonton, Alberta.[1] He failed to complete an education degree at the University of Alberta where he majored in history.[1]

Caterina became a business man by founding three clothing stores in 1974 and later founded a local industrial pipe insulation company.[2] He became involved in civic politics as a member of the Board of Directors for the Alberta Avenue Business Association.[2]

Political career

Caterina ran for a seat Edmonton municipal council as a candidate in the 2004 Edmonton municipal election in Ward 3. He finished in third place out of five candidates losing to Ed Gibbons and Janice Melnychuk.[3] He ran a controversial attack campaign against the two incumbents that gave him a tough reputation in municipal politics.[1]

After losing in the municipal election, Caterina ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in the electoral district of Edmonton-Centre in the 2004 Alberta general election. He was defeated finishing in fifth out of sixth place losing to incumbent Laurie Blakeman.[4] The two polls occurred only a month apart.

First term

Caterina ran for Edmonton municipal council a second time in the 2007 Edmonton municipal election. Despite losing popular vote from the previous election he took the second place seat through aggressive political tactics in the eight way race for Ward 6. The seat was left open with the retirement of councilor Janice Melnychuk.[3]

Despite popular opinion Caterina attempted to keep Edmonton Centre Airport CYXD from being closed.[1] He has been a fiscal conservative on council encouraging the city to exercise budgetary restraint.[1] He serves as a representative for the City of Edmonton as a member of the Board of Directors for Northlands since being elected in 2007.[5]

Second term

Caterina ran for a second term in office in the 2010 Edmonton municipal election this time in a different area, Ward 7.[6] Although having won his campaign for Ward 7, Tony has been targeted where his campaign signs were marked by graffiti artists in 2010.[7]

Third term

Caterina was reelected in October 2013.
