He had been living a normal and laid back life seeing that he could not accomplish anything without any magical powers. When he was young, he made a promise with Natsume to become her shikigami and protect her. After witnessing the death of Hokuto, he became Natsume's shikigami to keep his promise he made to her many years ago. He seems to have some sort of 'Bad luck' which he considers an ancient curse passed down by his ancestors. He is really weak in studies and is usually tutored by Natsume to avoid being held back a year. Later in the Light Novel, the real identity of Harutora is revealed. He is the real reincarnation of Yakou Tsuchimikado. When he and Natsume were born, their places were exchanged. He was sent to the branch family and Natsume was sent to the main family. In the moment he regained his memories of the previous life, Natsume was killed. He performed the Taizan Fukun Ritual and revived her but then he leaves Natsume.

Terminology

Onmyoudou (陰陽道 Omiyōdō)
Also known as Shamanism, is a style of eastern magic that combines concepts and aspects of Taoism, Buddhism, Shintoism and Kuji which originated from Japan. It flourished heavily during the Heian Period to the point where it once held great influence in the Imperial Courts, but the tradition eventually waned and nearly died out. However that changed between time of the Meiji Restoration and World War II, where at that point Japan was desperate to become a world power. To that end it reopened sorcery once again and allowed it to be integrated into the military with the prosperity of the country's future in mind, thus the era of "Restoration of Magic" began with Tsuchimikado Clan being the central figures of its new movement. Around the period of World War II, Tsuchimikado Yakou had collected all of Japan's magical traditions and refined them into completely new all encompassing style of magic called the Imperial-Style which lead to major victories and huge gain of political power for Japan in the war. This system was later further refined and simplified into what is now known as Common-Style giving birth to the modern Onmyoudo. Now magic continues to thrive and has now become a institutionalized aspect of society with multiple applications in various fields such as medicine, and technology thanks to the efforts and achievements of Yakou after World War II.
Onmyouji (陰陽師 Omiyōji)
Also known as Shamans, are the term for what magicians of Onmyouji are called. Nowadays it is a valid profession like any other, but requires a government certification after years of training to be recognized one and be allowed to perform magic.\
Onmyo Agency
An organization established during World War II by request of the military with the original intent to utilize magic booster their strength in the war. Back before the war it is was originally called Onmyo Bureau which it was later disbanded and then reintegrated into the military with purpose creating more shamans. Yakou installed as it's first Head. When the war ended it's focus changed and became a bureaucratic body charged with regulating the now more widely spread Onmyoudo and dealing with the frequent spiritual disasters in Tokyo. It has jurisdictions and legalities over all things concerning magic in Japan. It is because of this that organization has run into some unrest with more traditional members and sects of Onmyoudo who feel that their ways are being trampled upon. The agency has many divisions and departments, but most prominent of them of are the Magical Investigation, Exorcism and Spirit Divisions.
Magic Investigation Division
The section in-charge of human magic related affairs. They are essentially the Law Enforcement arm of the Onmyo Agency who's role is to make sure the Shamanic Laws are upheld by dealing spell related crimes. Amami Daizen is the current Chief of this division.
Exorcism Division
The section in-charge of handling spiritual disasters and keeping spiritual disturbances to a minimum. Due to the nature of their work the Exorcism Officers are considered the strongest units in agency. Kyouko's father is its current Chief.
Spirit Division
A section once in-charge of research and study of souls. Yakou Tsuchimikado's Imperial Arts/Style was of particular interest to this Division since many of its aspects utilized soul manipulation. However, it was later revealed to be a nest of Yakou fanatics known as Twin Horn Syndicate who were behind a large-scale spiritual disaster 2 years ago called the "Joushi no Oharae"(lit the "Great Purification of March 3"). Using the Spirit Division as a front Twin Horn had conducted the first ever known case of spiritual terrorism. After the incident this division was abolished, Shidou Darenji was its last Chief.

Onmyo Academy/Onmyo Preparatory School

One of the top magic related vocational schools in Japan who's history stretches back to a quarter century. Its facilities are state of art both in tech and sorcery. The institution is known for its rigorous curriculum but it has turned out a great many alumni who have gone to become Divine Generals, taken high positions Onmyo Agency or in the government as well as become famous in other ways. The school is guarded by two high class man-made shikigami called Alpha and Omega.

Twin Horn Syndicate/Bicornis Fellowship

The Twin Horn Syndicate/Bicornis Fellowship is the infamous organization that caused the Spiritual Disaster two years prior to the story. The Twin Horn Syndicate conducted the Spiritual Disaster using the Spirit Divison of the Onmyo Agency as a front. The head of this organization Shidou Dairenji used himself as a core to trigger the Spiritual Disaster. The Twin Horn Syndicate/Bicornis Fellowship has been labelled as a terrorist group by the Onmyou Agency. The organization still runs today and are also revealed as a cult who are Yakou fanatics and regard him as a God, thus they are after Natsume since her birth as she is assumed to be the reincarnation of Yakou Tsuchimikado. To the public they are known as The Order of North Star.
The Twelve Divine Generals (十二神将 Jūnishinshō)
A group of first-rate Onmyouji who have been deemed the best spell users in the country by passing the highest levels of the National Omnyo Exam and earned the qualifications to use strongest from of Koushu of the Common Arts. While these individuals have mastered various high end techniques, they are most known for their particular specialties from which their nicknames are derived from. They have a celebrity status in the media which makes them highly popular nationwide. The term Divine General was also originally coined by the media.

The Great Spiritual Disaster

Catastrophic event that occurred at the end of World War II as a consequence of a failed grand magic by Tsuchimikado Yakou. At that time Japan was losing the World War II, so in order turn tide in their favor once again, the government ordered Yakou to create a spell that would allow them to win. However something went amiss with the ritual which lead to a massive spiritual disaster that spread throughout the entirely of Tokyo turning into unhallowed ground, for years. Even now the scars of that cataclysm still remain as spiritual disasters as well as their effects continue to happen, though far from that scale. The Imperial Government had shifted all of the responsibility on Yakou, causing Tsuchimikado Clan to fall into ruin. Yakou now a controversial figure disappeared shortly after.

Spirit Sight

A basic passive ability which is required for any Onmyouji to use magic. It allows them to see spirits and energy necessary to manipulate spells. It cannot be learned as Shamans can only be born with it. So it serves as a symbol of those who have the talent to become Shamans.
Shikigami (式神)
A type of eastern familiar which can either serve as tools or partners of an Onmyouji and are required for rituals. Shikigami can be made artificially or by bonding with spirits such as Youkai. Because of this Shikigami re grouped into two major types: Man-mades and Servants which are further broken down various sub-groups and sorted by usage. Within these two main group exists a sub-class of Shikigami called Gohou-Types (Defense Familiars) which characterized by requirement it's users very strong spiritual energy to maintain it's corporeal forms for long periods of times. The strain of this is usually too high even for most professional shamans. Because of this those who can handle them are considered potential first class Shamans.
Man-made Type
Shikigami that made through objects such as paper or metal by having the caster infuse them with spell and spiritual energy. Out of the two major types this more common one. These are further split into 3 main catagories: First, Basic/Simple Man-mades which can only stay summoned when supplied with its master's spiritual energy and must be operated directly or be given prior instructions. Second, Standard Man-mades which can stay summoned for brief periods of time without their master's spirit energy and have limited self-awareness. Third, High-Class Man-mades which are Shikigami that have complete self-awareness. Man-made types are also sorted by their usage and such as general types which have several different applications and pursuit/combat types who's function specialize in appending criminals. In general an artificial Shikigami's make in terms of strength, function and structure are highly dependent on the user's power. So even a basic man-made can be of very high quality if the mage behind it is of great talent.
Servant Type
The much rarer type of Shikigami which are created through contracts or enslavement of Spirit Beasts and other beings. Unlike Man-made Types, Servant Types naturally have their own will and spiritual energy which allows them to generate their own spells and abilities and thus are usually more powerful. However because the user and the spirit being(or beings) share spiritual energy due their bonding, the two are constantly connected. spirits beings are assuming corporeal form or not. So only those with high spiritual energy can actually utilize and maintain these types of familiars for

Imperial-Style

A revolutionary magic system created by Yakou after gathering, breaking down, rebuilding and refining old Onmyoudo at the behest of military. Being the culmination of all of Japan's magical techniques, and knowledge it is highest form of magic in the nation's history. Because it was created for military and political purposes (and not civilian use) it removed many of religious and abstract elements of old Onmyoudo and focused on practicability. Imperial Arts made use of several protocols and a technique called "soul manipulation" making it's spells capable of many possibilities and feats such as ability reincarnate or even revive dead which is impossible under the current magic system. Because of this it's considered much stronger, complex and varied than Common-Style. Officially, while many of it's spells are banned like Taizan Fukun Ritual, some are still are allowed use such as Spirit Step.

The next day Harutora is stopped by Kyouko who wants to know if he really likes Suzuka when out of nowhere Suzuka steps in the conversation and rants on about how Harutora likes Hokuto and not her. Seeing the tears in her eyes he remembers to be honest with himself and tells Kyouko about how Hokuto was a Shikigami being controlled outside, which leads to Kyouko's thoughts on how the possessor had to be very powerful to be able to keep Harutora from noticing her as a Shikigami for such a long time and how it couldn't be Natsume due to their different personalities. Later on the bus ride to home Natsume is mumbling "Bakatora" in her sleep to which Harutora grabs the pink ribbon from her hair and realizes that its the exact ribbon he won for Hokuto at the fair, making him believe that Hokuto's real controller was Natsume.
