Thiruvottriyur (also called Thiruvotriyur or 'TVT') is located within the city premises of Chennai. It is located to the north of Chennai. Due to its proximity to Parrys and Chennai Central along with comparatively cheaper residential space and decent amenities, it is fast becoming a sought after residential destination. Tiruvottriyur which is one of the oldest habitations by the sea, has a diverse residential population due to the industrial units, trading activity and nearby fishing hamlets. The area is easily accessible by Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses from across the city and has a bus terminus. The area is also served by Tiruvottiyur railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network.

Thiruvottiyur was widely inhabited even before Chennai was formed. Thiruvottiyur is home to the ancient Thyagaraja Temple, Tiruvottiyur (one of the Paadal Petra Sthalangal and amongst the great Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu) and location of the samādhi of saint Pattinathar. This temple was visited by many saints and poets like Appar, Sundarar, Gnana Sambandhar, Thyagayyar, Vallalar, Valmiki, Kambar, Adi Shankara etc. Kamba Ramayanam was composed here at Thyagaraja Swamy Vadivudaiamman Temple, before it was recited at Sri Rangam, Trichy
Geography
Tiruvottiyur is located at 13°10′N 80°18′E / 13.16°N 80.3°E.[1] Its an esplanade located on the shores of Bay of Bengal. The sea encroachment was a major problem for the fishermen before building of Groynes was started in 2004. The groynes, put up over a length of four km, vary in length from 165–300 metres each. Their height is four meters above the mean sea level. After a few years some acres have been reclaimed with the formation of a beach as predicted.
Demographics
As of the census of India 2001, Tiruvottiyur had a population of 212,281 comprising 108,720 males and 103,561 females, making the sex ratio (number of females per thousand males) of the town to 953. A total of 23,867 people were under six years of age and the child sex ratio (number of females per thousand males under six years of age) stood at 952. The town had an average literacy of 85.05%, higher than the national average of 59.5%. A total of 26,177 comprising 13.89% of the population belonged to Scheduled Castes (SC) and 363 comprising 0.19% of the population belonged to Scheduled tribes (ST). There were are total of 49,068 households in the town. As of 2001, Tiruvottiyur had a total of 63,699 main workers: 707 cultivators, 334 agricultural labourers, 1,335 in house hold industries and 61,323 other workers. There was a total of 6,711 marginal workers: 146 marginal cultivators, 57 marginal agricultural labourers, 253 marginal workers in household industries and 6,255 other marginal workers.[2]
During 2001-2011, the population of Tiruvottiyur rose to 248,059, registering a decadal growth of 17 percent.[3]

Road
Thiruvottiyur MTC Bus Depot was formed in 1975 in Ajax. There are buses operated from here to all over chennai & also a few limited services which run to various parts of the Tamil Nadu state. There is a bus available to Parrys corner for every 10 mins through different routes.Also this part of the city is supported by a good amount of auto rickshaws & share autos. Due to the delayed Road widening project, traffic congestion is common in Theradi during peak hours.

Thiruvottriyur is located at the Chennai Central - Gummidipoondi suburban line of Chennai. The number of train services in this route are quite frequent.
