Tirusulam is a suburb of Chennai, India. For administrative purposes, it is a census town in Kancheepuram district. The Chennai International Airport terminals are located here. Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA, ICAO: VOMM) is the primary airport serving the southern Indian metropolis of Chennai.The airport is the regional headquarters of the Airports Authority of India for the southern region of India comprising the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Kerala and the union territories of Puducherry and Lakshadweep.[5]

As of 2012, the airport handles 13.5 million passengers annually and about 325 aircraft movements a day. The airport is expected to reach saturation by 2016–17, necessitating the construction of a second international airport.

There is also a railway station here (opposite the airport) with a convenient pedestrian subway that connects the station and the airport. The neighbourhood is served by Tirusulam railway station. There is a Construction of Metro Train Station connected by both Airport and Sub-Urban Railway Station. That will be active on 2015.

History

The township of Tirusulam has its origin in the Tiruppurasundari Tirusoolanathar temple which is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century AD by Kulothunga I. The walls of the temple are inscribed with inscriptions from the Chola period.Tirusulam is well known for its Tiruppurasundari Tirusoolanathar temple. The temple has its big history behind the walls. There is a story about hiding the precious metals and jewels beneath earth, where the temple have the secret way. Kulothunga I was the one who planned to hide the source inside the temple. There is a subway under the temple, which connects the temple and near by hill known as "Panchapandava's hills', where the king had his palace. Tirusulam is one of the Census Town in Kancheepuram District. Census Town 5,997 pop. [2001] 2.41 km² = 2,478.4 inh./km² The Tirusulam Hills have been used as a shooting spot for various Tamil movies and television soaps. The Chennai International and Domestic Airport is present here in Tirusulam, you can get the clear and full view of the Airport from the Tiruslam mountain.

Geography

Tirusulam hill

This is the tallest hill in the city, and it is special in spiritual things. There is Mosque in the top of the Mountain, and Right side of the hill Tamil Hindu God 'Murugan Temple' is there, and left side of the hill Church is there. The Hill is a shooting spot for Tamil Movies and Television dramas. Some of the movies that have been filmed here include Bhairavi, Oor Kaavalan and Indru Poi Naalai Vaa, Gentleman, Theeradha Vilayattu pillai etc. The central government has also set up a research centre on the hill.

Religion

Tirusulam has lots of temples and churches. Tirusoolanathar temple is the famous temple in the locality, which was re-built recently and Maha-Kumbaphisegam conducted Successfully.Tirusulam has 4 temples in it's 4 sides of the territory known as Santhiyamman Kovil (Located in Airport), Mukkaniyamman Kovil, Pachaiyamman Kovil, Vempuliyamman Kovil which is very special. Apposta church is the biggest church in the locality. There are Number of Churches around here for Christianity followers.

Tirusulam Market

Tirusulam has a very big market(formerly called as Pallavaram Market) which has hundreds of shops and roadside vendors which is in operation for more than 75 years. This Market now only available on Fridays of every Week. Now this Tirusulam Market is located very near by Chennai International Airport. It is possible to find almost all the things in the market from Vegetables to house hold items, Electrical and Electronic Gadgets, Books, Dressings, Plants, Flowers, Tools, Knifes,etc.

Tirusulam Lakes

As Tirusulam has no of mountains, there are small lakes with large amount of water. Because of the presence of these lakes tirusulam census town has never experienced scarcity of water. Due to the presence of the lakes and mountains the living in here is very healthy and very natural.

Transport

Tirusulam is well connected to the city of Chennai by public transportation services including the famous electric train service that was built during British rule. Tirusulam is located in the Beach - Tambaram-Chengalpattu suburban railway network. Train service is one of the important transport source for the residents here. The Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST) that connects various south Indian cities to Chennai passes through this township. Buses to Tambaram, Chennai Beach, T Nagar, High Court, Avadi etc. are available at regular intervals from Tirusulam. Tirusulam bus stop is a boon to the thousands of residents in and around this area to reach the main road and some other important landmarks in Chennai city.

Since Chennai International Airport is located here in Tirusulam, The both Electric Train Service and Metropolitan Bus service help to connect the all parts of the city to the airport. The ongoing Construction of Metro Train which will be completed and active on 2015, and the Railway Minister's Announcement of Possibility of Railway junction in 5 years(e.g Egmore and Tambaram), this township is going to be the biggest Transportation hub in chennai city.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,^[1] Tirusulam had a population of 5997. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Tirusulam has an average literacy rate of 60%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 68%, and female literacy is 51%. In Tirusulam, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
