Early life
Tino Coury was passionate about music early on though it was clear sports was priority.[citation needed] Tino was planning to pursue his higher education on a football scholarship until he suffered a devastating injury during a football game his senior year in high school playing for the Chartiers Valley Colts. The injury was serious enough that he knew he wasn't going to have a future in sports. He then turned prioritized music in his life. He had taught himself to play guitar, then continued learning the piano, bass, and drums until he was writing his own songs. "When I was in eighth grade or so, I loved Blink-182 and Green Day," he recalls. "I was into hip-hop and pop too, but those punk-rock tunes were so amazing. I got the guitar tabs and starting learning to play the songs, which were simple but incredibly catchy. Blink really influenced my songwriting." He now uses the discipline, practice, and commitment that he used on the playing field and transferred all of that to his music.[1] Tino is the son of Robert J. Coury, Executive Chairman and former CEO of Mylan Labs.[2]
In the music scene
Since the May 2010 release of his single “Diary”—which peaked at No. 38 on the US Top 40 Chart, and that also reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club chart—Tino Coury has been “blowing up the pop scene,” noted Usmagazine.com.[3]
Tino Coury is a Pittsburgh bred, Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer and is the first artist signed to indie label Eleventh Records, distributed through Universal’s Fontana—has been earning fans all over the country by performing on national TV and at shows with Jason Derulo (at the sold-out The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza), Drake, Train, Iyaz, New Boyz, Mike Posner, Kelly Rowland, Cartel, Kris Allen, and the Backstreet Boys, among others.
The buzz surrounding Coury began in May 2010 when “Diary” landed on over 50 Top 40 and Rhythmic stations in its first week of release, an achievement unrivaled in recent history by any new independent artist. Although Tino and his Eleventh team were blown away by how quickly the track was embraced by radio, prior to the singles radio release Tino had already started building the buzz hitting the road to visit radio stations across the country and performing live shows in hopes of connecting with fans and gaining new supporters.
The "Diary" music video was Directed by Roman White who has created videos for the biggest names in music today such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson and Justin Bieber, and has logged over 2 million views on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/tinocoury#p/f/2/S83xZjjgu4c
For multi-instrumentalist Tino, it all starts with the music. “When I write a song,” he says, “I want a beat you can dance to, a great track–but also a story. There has to be a heart to it.” Billboard magazine, in a review of “Diary,” took note of Coury’s mix of musicality and story-based lyrics: “Despite its themes of betrayal, dissatisfaction and letdown for its lead singer, the song’s sticking point is an irresistibly buoyant beat that should keep listeners tuned in and dancing” (June 19, 2010).
Now, in 2012 Tino Coury has officially released his first full length album titled "This One’s For". With its fierce mix of larger-than-life beats, deadly-catchy melodies, and soulful sensibility, the 11-track album reveals the breadth of talent behind the 24-year-old Pittsburgh native. Always striving to grow and perfect his craft, Tino looked for partners to help him tackle the task of his first full length release. This One’s For features a powerful lineup of producers, including Da Internz (Rihanna, Big Sean), Sham & Motesart (K’naan, Willow Smith), Kadis & Sean (Luke James, Brandy), and Mansur (Monica, Ashanti). In crafting songs for This One’s For, Coury also teamed up with heavy-hitting songwriters like Redd Stylez (Usher, Alicia Keys), Jackie Boyz (Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Madonna, Sean Kingston), Lil Eddie (Jessie J, P. Diddy), and Marlin “Hookman” Bonds (Swizz Beatz, Bow Wow).
“From the EP to the album, every aspect of my music evolved,” says Coury, who shared production duties on This One’s For. “The album has a much deeper sound—right down to the little things, like how the synths and the drums are hitting. Working with all these producers and writers opened my mind and elevated my game tremendously, and at the same time my vocals and my approach have really matured. Each of the songs takes you through a different scenario of my life, so by the end it’s like you’ve gone through a personal journey of mine. One of the greatest compliments is when someone who listens to my music says how it makes them relate to me and my story but they are still able to apply and connect the lyrics to their own lives. Continuing on that path was definitely a goal for this record.”
