Early life
Tiga was born to hippie parents and spent part of his early life in Goa, India.[3]
Career
1980s–1990s
In 1990 Tiga and a few friends started throwing small parties and street promotions in Montreal that evolved into a cult following.[4] Having bought DNA records in 1994, the nightclub SONA was then conceived in Montreal in 1996, with Tiga having a major role to play in the creation of the dance scene at the time.[5] A few years later in 1998, Tiga founded Turbo Recordings, which went onto release records such as Peter Benisch’s “Soundtrack Saga,” Christopher Handlebar’s “To a Time of Asia” along with Tiga’s own “Mixed Emotions” and “American Gigolo”. The recording studio secured global distribution with Prime, Intergroove and Caroline.
2000–2003
In 2001, Tiga entered the studio with producer Zyntherius to record a rendition of Corey Hart's solo song, “Sunglasses at Night.” The track also made it to number two on the UK Dance Chart, number 23 on the UK National Singles Chart, number one on the MTV Dance Chart for over six weeks and was in the Top 20 on Germany’s National Singles Chart. Tiga also performed “Sunglasses at Night” with Zyntherius on Top Of The Pops.[6]
Tiga completed remixes for the likes of Martini Bros, Alipinestars, Linda Lamb, Crossover, FC Kahuna, Cabaret Voltaire, Telepopmusik, Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner and Dannii Minogue in the years that followed the success of “Sunglasses at Night.” In 2003, he commanded the attention of the scene with a mix CD for K7’s legendary DJ Kicks series.[5] This was followed by the release of Tiga’s version of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” which was licensed in the UK by Skint and Warner Music Germany. Tiga also offered up vocals on Richard X’s “You (Better Let Me Love You x4) Tonight” as well as on “Heartbreak/Ananda” by Adam Beyer and Jesper Dahlback, and Rik Stamina’s “Dancing Inside You”. Tiga remixed Alex Kidd’s “Come With Me”, Neon Judgement’s “TV Treated,” as well as Scissor Sisters’ cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” He also remixed “Da Hype,” by Junior Jack and Robert Smith, and Soulwax’s “E Talking”.
2004–2007: Sexor
In 2004, Tiga released another single, entitled "Pleasure from The Bass", on Belgian imprint PIAS. The single “You Gonna Want Me”, a duet performed with Jake Shears (of Scissor Sisters fame) followed shortly after. In 2005, he completed remixes for Depeche Mode, The Vests, Moby, LCD Soundsystem, Mylo, Phillipe Zdar, Chelonius Jones, Drama Society & Thomas Andersson to name a few.
2006 marked the release of Tiga's debut album, Sexor. This was followed with his European and Canadian tours, “Sexor over Europe” and “Sexor over Canada”. He also released a video for “(Far From) Home” that year, shot in Tokyo & directed by Nagi Noda. The single included remix work by the DFA, Digitalism, and Chicken Lips, as well as a remix by Tiga himself, "The Speed of Sexor Reprise". Both "You Gonna Want Me" and "(Far from) Home" featured on charts in both the UK and Australia and Sexor won the 2007 Juno Award for Dance Recording of the Year.
The first single to come from Tiga after the release of his debut album was "Mind Dimension", which was written and produced by Tiga and Jesper Dahlback and released in December 2008. "Mind Dimension 2" was reworked and contains additional production by Soulwax.
2008–2009: Ciao!
The release of Tiga's second album, Ciao! took place in 2009. Collaborators included Soulwax, Jesper Dahlbäck, Jori Hulkkonen and Jake Shears, as well as James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and Chilly Gonzales. The popular singles "Shoes" and "What You Need" were releases from this album.
2011–2012: Party's Over, Earth
ZZT released their debut album, Party's Over, Earth on Turbo Recordings in 2011. In November 2012, Tiga released his first single in 6 years, Plush on Different Recordings, which was then remixed by Ame, Jacques Lu Cont and Sinichi Osawa. He also compiled a mix CD called Tiga Non Stop, which features songs by Duke Dumont, Jacques Greene and Locked Groove.
Turbo Recordings
Tiga founded Turbo Recordings in Montreal in 1998. The label helped launch his own career,[4] at the same time as being central in the success of acts such as Chromeo, Proxy and Azari & III. Other names on the label include Jesper Dahlbäck, Gingy & Bordello, Jori Hulkkonen, Duke Dumont, Brodinski, Zdar, D.I.M, Martini Bros, Stu Thousand VI, Boys Noize and Sei A.[4]
