Thurakapalem (తురకపాలెం) is a village located in Muppalla Mandal of the Guntur district in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh . This village comes under the authority of the Sattenapalli Assembly Constitution and the Narasaraopet Parliamentary Constitution. It is found 3 km from Mandal Muppalla, 12 km from Narasaraopet City and 14 km from Sattenapalli City.

History

Thurakapalem was founded nearly 200 years ago. Many families left from Gandikota in the year 1700 due to Muslim aggression and settled in Guntur district (Thurakapalem, Ravipadu, Kanaparthi, Attuluru, Thalluru). They were called Gandikota Kammas and were eventually converted to Roman Catholicism (Christianity).

Geography

Thurakapalem is located at 16°19′48″N 80°03′58″E / 16.330°N 80.066°E / 16.330; 80.066. It has an average elevation of 92 meters (302 ft)above the sea level and is situated on the plains. It is located around 62 miles (100 km) to the west of the Bay of Bengal on the east coast of India. It is covered by rich and fertile agricultural lands with one major irrigation canal. The topography of Thurakapalem is primarily flat.

The village has a hot and humid climate, the summers being extremely warm. The year may be divided into four seasons. Dry and Cool Winter Season (December to February), Summer Season (March to May), South-West Monsoon Season (June to September), Post Monsoon or Retreating Monsoon Season (October to November). The temperature is generally higher by 48 °C (118 °F) in the summer and the night temperatures lower down to almost 18.6 °C (65.5 °F) in the winter. The overall yearly temperature averages 27 °C (81 °F).

Storms and depressions, originating in the Bay of Bengal, cross the east coast of the district causing wide spread and very heavy rains and strong winds. The rains are experienced mostly by both the south-west monsoon and the retreating monsoon. October is the wettest month of the year.

Demographics

The population of Thurakapalem (as of the 2011 India census) is 1400; males and females both constituting 50% of the population. The village has an average literacy rate of 99%, male literacy is 99% and female literacy is 96%. In Thurakapalem 10% of the population is under six years of age. The majority of the population practices Roman Catholicism, although very small communities of Hindus do exist.

Culture

The culture of the village refers to the way of life of the people of Thurakapalem. All the people speak the language Telugu. The common traditional clothing for women is a Saree and for men a Pancha, Lungi, or Uttariyam.

  • Roadways : The village does not currently have any RTC buses. Most of the people depend on private buses, auto rickshaws, motorcycles and bicycles. People travel long distances, e.g. to Hyderabad, using public and private transport from Sattenapalli and Narasaraopet.
  • Railways : The nearest railway station is Sattenapalli (SAP) 16 km from the village. There are several trains to most destinations of South India (Hyderabad, Tirupathi, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochi, Trivandrum ) and some places like Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Surat etc. Other close railway stations are Narasaraopet (14 km) and Guntur (50 km).
  • Airways : The nearest airport to the village is Vijayawada Airport (105 km). It is a local airport and offers limited flights to places such as Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. The closest international airport is located at Hyderabad (262 km).

Cultivation

The inhabitants of Thurakapalem cultivate paddy (rice) and commercial crops like cotton, mirchi, and subabul (Leucaena leucocephala). The Nagarjuna Sagar Right canal branch is situated beside the village and helps the people yield their crops, as well as being vital to their cultivation practices. These people are enthusiastic about adopting new cultivation techniques because the crops help enhance the economic strength of their region.
