Thungathurthy is a historically important village in the Nalgonda district. It was notable mainly for many social revolutions that have taken place during the 'Freedom movement' of India.

Armed struggle

Also significant was the Telangana movement of the Reddy Razakar rulers against the Nizam rulers. As a result, there are a significant number of freedom fighters in the village and other minor villages in its vicinity, mainly Ganugabanda. Just as in most rural parts of Andhra Pradesh, the Communist Party of India is a major player in village politics, as the poor, active voters tend to choose their politicians.

The village was bought onto the map of revolutionary resistance when a local, Bheemireddy Narasimha Reddy, senior leader of Telangana Peasant Armed Struggle, dared the Nawabs and the Indian state, and called for a separate state of Telangana with respect to the provisions made during the framing of the constitution of India. His legacy of activist struggle for basic human rights and against state fascism remains intact among the villagers even today.

There are several places of worship in the village which are notable for their architecture, mainly the temple of Rama, the Baptist church, and the Mutyalamma and Sounamma Temple.

Economy

The local economy mainly depends on the agricultural sector. While cotton is now a major crop, rice has been its trademark crop since ages.

Despite its notable history, the government of Andhra Pradesh ignored the village's need for the most basic facilities such as clean drinking water, a sanitary sewage system, an efficient public hospital, and a school for higher education in English medium. Ironically, natives of Thungathurthi and the surrounding villages tend to have a high literacy rate when compared to the rest of Telangana. This may be because many natives tend to attend University in Hyderabad or in other nearby towns.

Prominent Telugu actor M. Prabhakar Reddy hails from this village.
