Thumbay Moideen, a third generation entrepreneur hailing from Mangalore, India is the Founder President of Thumbay Group.[3] Established in 1997, the U.A.E. based Thumbay Group initially evolved as a major healthcare player in the region and has since ventured into Education, Healthcare, Research, Diagnostics, Insurance services, Health Communications, Trading, Retail, Hospitality, Real Estate and Publishing.

Early Years

Born to Mr. Ahamed Hajee Mohiudeen and Mrs. Bee Fathima Ahmed Hajee on the 23rd of March, 1957, in the town of Thumbay, located at Mangalore, Karnataka, India. A third generation business entrepreneur hailing from a well-known business family from Mangalore, Moideen took to business at the young age of 21 years,[3] and demonstrated his business acumen right from the beginning. Handling the mantle of the large business house established by his father in 1957, he took the businesses to great heights within a few years. He is married to Zohra Moideen and has two sons, Akbar Moideen Thumbay and Akram Moideen Thumbay.[2]

Drawn by the U.A.E’s exponential growth and its investor-friendly policies, Moideen brought the family business to the Gulf with the launch of The Thumbay Group,UAE in 1997. He was the first expatriate to be invited by the Rulers of Ajman to start a medical college in U.A.E., as there was no existing set-up to cater to the needs of the students to pursue higher education in medicine and healthcare sciences in the private sector.[3] Thus, his first venture Gulf Medical University was established which ultimately became a destination for medical education not only for local students, but to students from over 67 countries.[3][4]

Starting with establishment of his corporate firm, Thumbay Group in 1997, he set up business operations in 13 sectors over the course of 16 years.[3] Today, the Group has developed into a business conglomerate with diversified interests in hospitals, medical centres, diagnostic centres, healthclubs, pharmacies, retail outlets, coffee shoppes and nutrition stores spread out across the Emirates.[3][4] The organization employs more than 2200 employees in the UAE. Presently Thumbay Group is listed among the “Top 100 Companies making an impact in the Arab World” by Forbes Middle East.[5]

Thumbay Moideen is involved with various philanthropic & community services.

Some of his notable social activities include:

  • Support for poor and needy couples for their marriages.
  • Support for economically backward Indians in India and U.A.E. who wished to perform Hajj pilgrimage.
  • Setting up of a unique Patient Affairs Department in GMC Hospitals to identify poor patients who deserved free or subsidized healthcare. As a human endeavour, GMC Hospitals in UAE regularly conducts free health camps on eye care, dental, diabetic among other commonly prevalent diseases. More than 500,000 people have benefited from these free health camps.
  • Offers free scholarships to the deserving Indian and foreign students who wish to pursue their higher education at Gulf Medical University, UAE through the Care & Share Program at Thumbay Group.

Thumbay Foundation

The THUMBAY Foundation is a charitable trust established by Thumbay Moideen to support charitable activities in healthcare & education through scholarships, grants, bursaries, awards, fellowships, endowments, donations and other forms of financial assistance to students pursuing any level of education or training in any educational or training institutions or establishments or otherwise in such manner as may be decided by the Foundation.
