Thornton-le-Moor is a village and civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England located equidistantly between the towns of Thirsk and Northallerton.

Amenities

Amenities comprise one pub ('The Black Swan') and a postbox. A caravan site is located at nearby South Otterington. The village cricket club formed in the 1950s and currently play in the Nidderdale Amateur Cricket League on Saturday afternoons from April to September.

History

The Victorian primary school opened in 1860 and closed in 1993, when it merged with another local school in Newby Wiske to form a new school in neighbouring South Otterington. The village church of St Barnabas was built in 1868 but demolished in 1987 after its partial collapse in the previous year. The churchyard is still maintained.

Social

The village has an active social life with a regular weekly meeting of 'The Crofters' in the Black Swan and a Village society which organises annual events such as a village Fete and Sports day together with various other interactive venues such as Shakespeare evenings,Easter events,organised attraction visits,a regular New Years Day walk and regular weekly/monthly walks as mooted plus the occasional charity event.

With the seasonal steam railway trips from York and the Dales it is also possible to get some spectacular photo shots from the road through the village at Otterington Halt railway bridge.

Many of the Grand houses throughout the village have their roots steeped in the historic yorkshire breweries and railway links for their produce and have some very interesting tales to be told!
