Thomas Charles "Tom" Slaney (1852 – 1935) was an English footballer and manager who was the first manager of Stoke.[1]
Career
Slaney trained as a teacher at Saltley Collage until 1874 and was appointed Stoke's Secretary-Manager in the summer of 1874 holding the position until his resignation in 1883.[1] He continued to play during his time in office and was club captain for seven years from 1875. Described as a "fine and dashing" player, he stopped playing to become a referee in 1885.[1] Slaney also helped form the Staffordshire Football Association.[1]
