Thomas Eisfeld (born 18 January 1993) is a German professional footballer who plays for Arsenal as an attacking midfielder.[2]

Career

Eisfeld began his career at Borussia Dortmund youth academy. He previously played for SV Quitt Ankum and VfL Osnabrück before joining Borussia Dortmund.[3] In 2009 he experienced a cruciate ligament injury.[3] After his recovery, he scored six goals in twelve matches for the Dortmund U-19 team during the 2011–12 season.

After leaving Dortmund, he was signed by Arsenal on 31 January 2012 for a reported fee of £475,000 which was due as compensation for training him as an academy player.[4] Arsène Wenger described Eisfeld as having "the attitude and technical ability to be a valuable addition to our squad."[5]

2012–13

Eisfeld was later selected for Arsenal's 24 man squad to tour of Asia during July 2012.[6] In a match against a Malaysia XI, Eisfeld replaced Theo Walcott and scored Arsenal's first goal of the game which finished in a 2–1 victory, in Arsenal's favour.[7] Thomas made a final appearance on the tour coming on as a substitute, once again, and scoring Arsenal's equalizing goal in a match with Kitchee SC, which ended 2–2.[8]

Eisfeld made his professional debut on 30 October in a League Cup game against Reading, coming on as a substitute in the 58th minute. Arsenal won the game 7–5 in extra time, after being 4–0 down during the first half.[9]

2013–14

Eisfeld again joined the Arsenal first team as they toured the Far East during the 2013–14 pre-season, donning the number 34 shirt. He scored in the team's first game against the Indonesian Dream Team.[10]

Eisfeld started in the Football League Cup tie against West Bromwich Albion, scoring the opening goal for the Gunners and his first for the Arsenal first team. His performance in this game prompted comparisons to former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires.[11]

Style of play

Arsene Wenger has described Eisfeld as a player who is in the right place at the right time. He is also known for a good first touch and for his ability to stay calm in front of goal.[11][12]
