Thierachern is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Thierachern has an area of 7.5 km2 (2.9 sq mi). Of this area, 67.4% is used for agricultural purposes, while 17% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 11% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (4.6%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

It is situated 5 km (3.1 mi) from downtown Thun. Thierachern does not have an actual village center, but is divided into five subsections (Wahlen, Dorf, oberer (upper), middle and lower Schwand and Brügg).

Demographics

Thierachern has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 2,350.[1] As of 2007, 2.3% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has grown at a rate of 7.1%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (97.4%), with French being second most common ( 0.9%) and English being third ( 0.4%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 38.7% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SPS (18.8%), the local small left-wing parties (11.8%) and the Green Party (10.2%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 24% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 63.5% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 12.5%. In Thierachern about 82.1% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Thierachern has an unemployment rate of 1.88%. As of 2005, there were 106 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 34 businesses involved in this sector. 38 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 13 businesses in this sector. 157 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 38 businesses in this sector.[3]
