T.tepidarius (from the Latin tepidarium; a warm bath fed by natural thermal water) is a proteobacteria species isolated from the hot springs at Bath, Avon.[1] It was previously in the genus Thiobacillus.[2] The organism is a moderate thermophile (43-45°C) and an obligate aerobic chemolithotrophic autotroph. Despite having an optimum pH of 6.0–7.5, growth can continue to an acid minimum of pH 4.8.[1] Growth can only occur on reduced inorganic sulfur compounds, and unlike species in the related genus Acidithiobacillus, T.tepidarius is unable to oxidise ferrous iron.[2]
