The Colourist is a rock band from Orange County, California formed by Adam Castilla and Maya Tuttle of Paper Thin Walls along with Castilla's friends Kollin Johannsen and Justin Wagner.[1][2] The group refers to its genre as "majestic rock" or "math pop".[3]

History

Beginnings

In 2009, the band won Best New Artist, Best Song and Best Live Band at the O.C. Music Awards with debut single "Little Games" becoming the No.1 song on Hype Machine.[4]

The following year, the band performed at South By Southwest 2010 in Austin, Texas, were recommended for the 2010 OC Music Awards as Best Song and Best New Artist, and took the title of Best Live Band in the Best of 2010 issue for Weekly.[5] In December of that year, the quartet was the resident band at Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa, California.[5]

Universal Republic Records

After years of performing concerts in their home town, the ensemble captured the eyes of major record labels during their residency at Los Angeles' Bootleg Theater. In July 2012, the band signed a record contract with Universal Republic Records.

Debut EP and studio albums

In late 2012 and early 2013, the ensemble spent five months in Eagle Rock, California recording fourteen songs, eleven of which will go on the upcoming full length studio album. Weeks after recording was completed, the quartet performed at Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.[1][6] On August 20, 2013, the band released their debut EP Lido.[7][8]

Trivia

The name of the band was decided when Castilla and Tuttle were chatting. While their friend was making a student film, she said "The Colourist is going to come in". Because the name was not already used, the ensemble decided to use the British/Canadian spelling because "it looks nicer".[11]
