Teuffenthal is a municipality in the administrative district of Thun in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Teuffenthal has an area of 4.6 km2 (1.8 sq mi). Of this area, 45.3% is used for agricultural purposes, while 50.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 3.5% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (0.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).[3]

It lies in the valley of the river Zulg, some 10 km (6.2 mi) eastward of the district capital Thun. The municipality has no direct centre, but consists of isolated hamlets and scattered farm settlements.

Demographics

Teuffenthal has a population (as of 31 December 2012) of 161.[1] As of 2007, 1.1% of the population was made up of foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years the population has decreased at a rate of -1.7%. Most of the population (as of 2000) speaks German (96.4%), with Serbo-Croatian being second most common ( 2.0%) and English being third ( 1.0%).

In the 2007 election the most popular party was the SVP which received 66.5% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the local small left-wing parties (10%), the SPS (8.7%) and the CSP (5.7%).

The age distribution of the population (as of 2000) is children and teenagers (0–19 years old) make up 29.9% of the population, while adults (20–64 years old) make up 56.9% and seniors (over 64 years old) make up 13.2%. In Teuffenthal about 64.8% of the population (between age 25-64) have completed either non-mandatory upper secondary education or additional higher education (either university or a Fachhochschule).

Teuffenthal has an unemployment rate of 0.7%. As of 2005, there were 85 people employed in the primary economic sector and about 32 businesses involved in this sector. 4 people are employed in the secondary sector and there are 2 businesses in this sector. 28 people are employed in the tertiary sector, with 5 businesses in this sector.[3]
