Tenodera aridifolia is a species of praying mantis in the subfamily Mantinae of the family Mantidae. Common names include Japanese Giant Mantis, オオカマキリ oo-kamakiri ("large mantis") in Japan, or 왕사마귀 wang-samagwi ("king mantis") in Korea, but the subspecies Tenodera aridifolia angustipennis have different common names, including Narrow-winged Mantis, チョウセンカマキリ chousen-kamakiri ("Korean mantis") in Japan, or 참사마귀 cham-samagwi ("true mantis") or just plain 사마귀 samagwi ("mantis") in Korea (in Korean 사마귀 means praying mantis and Tenodera angustipennis). About 200 nymphs will hatch out of a normal ootheca.
Range
Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and Tsushima), Taiwan, China, Korea, Southeast Asia and the subspecies Tenodera aridifolia angustipennis has been introduced to the United States of America.[1][2][3]
Description
Males are 68-92mm in length while females are 77-105mm in length. Tenodera aridifolia angustipennis in this species have an orange dot between their front legs and are much smaller than one or both of the other subspecies, Tenodera aridifolia aridifolia and Tenodera aridifolia brevicollis. The Mantids in this species look very similar to the species Tenodera sinensis.
