Tenkai Knights (展開騎士 Tenkai Kishi, Deployment Knights) is a 2013 Canadian-Japanese anime series, produced by Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions (ShoPro) and Spin Master,[1] animated by Bones and Shogakukan Music & Digital Entertainment. Initial reports, according to Anime News Network, indicated the series was being animated by Bones, according to an entry on Studio Wanpack's Blog back in May 2013, although it has been since removed.[2] While the series was broadcast on Cartoon Network in the United States in August 2013, there is no word as to when the series will air in Japan.[1]

Plot

Eons ago, a cube–like peaceful planet named Quarton, populated by shape–shifting living bricks called Tenkai, was ravaged by a war between two opposite factions: the Corekai and the Corrupted led by the ruthless warlord Vilius who desired to obtain the source of Tenkai Energy for his own purposes. However, the only ones who were strong enough to defeat him were the Tenkai Knights: Bravenwolf, Tributon, Valorn and Lydendor. Facing defeat, Vilius unleashed the mighty Tenkai Dragon, who was later defeated by the four Knights and its fragments were scattered across the planet. These heroes were never seen again, but the Corrupted have returned more powerful than ever.

Now on planet Earth in the year 2034, four humans named Guren, Ceylan, Toxsa, and Chooki are chosen to become the new generation of Tenkai Knights and prevent Vilius to take control of both Quarton and Earth.

Toys

The Tenkai Knights toy line is produced by Spin Master under the Ionix brand of construction bricks. Spin Master refers to Ionix as the next generation of construction, with "Bricks that shapeshift." Their line of products include bricks that look very similar to traditional construction bricks, but actually shapeshift and unfold into unique mini-figures.

To date, Ionix shapeshifting bricks fall into the following categories:

  • Mini-figure Bricks – 2x4 stud bricks that unfold into humanoid, 4 legged, and winged mini-figures.
  • Titan Bricks – Larger format bricks that unfold into larger central hubs from which a variety of articulated toys can be constructed.
  • Action Bricks – Standard sized bricks that shapeshift into projectile toys.
  • Power Bricks – Standard sized bricks that shapeshift and unlock electrically powered features, such as light projection.
  • Weapon Bricks – Standard sized bricks that unfold to reveal hidden decorative elements.

Characters

Tenkai Knights

  • Guren Nash and Bravenwolf
Voiced by: Johnny Yong Bosch
Guren is the main protagonist and leader of the new generations of Tenkai Knights. He has a knack for leadership (though he still has to grow into the role) and doesn't have fear even before more difficult things. He is described as always having a positive attitude. He can transform into Bravenwolf, the leader of the original Tenkai Knights. He describes himself as "Tenkai Power". As Bravenwolf, he is armed with a sword and shield. He is the first to unlock Titan mode, enlarging to twice his normal size and capable of releasing energy slashes.
  • Ceylan Jones and Tributon
Voiced by: Todd Haberkorn
Ceylan is friendly, goofy, outgoing and a big practical joker. When not goofing off, however, he can be surprisingly cautious. He can transform into Tributon. He describes himself as "Tenkai Speed". As Tributon, he is armed with a crossbow blaster and a shield. He is the second to unlock Titan mode, enlarging to twice his normal size and using a long bow blaster to shoot energy.
  • Chooki Mason and Lydendor
Voiced by: Bryce Papenbrook
Chooki has a calm disposition. He is the best athlete of the team and always looks forward to a challenge. He can transform into Lydendor. He describes himself as "Tenkai Agility". As Lydendor, he is armed with a short blade that he can wield in melee combat or cause the blade to shoot out on a chain to use it as a flail, and a shield that has three curved blades that he can throw and have it return to him. He is the third to unlock Titan mode, enlarging to twice his normal size and his shield resembles a large shuriken which he uses offensively and defensively.
  • Toxsa Dalton and Valorn
Voiced by: Ben Diskin
Though Toxsa's a year younger than his teammates, he is at least as smart as them and thus in the same grade. He is something of a tech geek. He enjoys playing video games and tinkering with digital equipment when not helping out at his family's diner. He is quirky, short-tempered and is more comfortable with computers than with people. He can transform into Valorn. He describes himself as "Tenkai Strength" and also claimed to be the physically strongest of the Knights. As Valorn, he is armed with a spear that can fire green energy charges or a green energy beam from the end as well as a shield. He is the fourth and last to unlock Titan mode, enlarging to twice his normal size and gaining a sword like polearm that can split open to release large energy blasts.

Corekai

  • Beag
Voiced by: Kyle Hebert
Beag is the commander of the Corekai. He is often confused by the otherworldly comments the young Tenkai Knights make due to him not knowing they aren't the original Tenkai Knights. He seems to have a case of hero worship, but is fairly intelligent. He and two of his allies joined the Tenkai Knights in Robofusion, granting them the ability to use both the Protojet and the Air Lancer Jet at the same time.
  • Corekai Soldiers
The Corekai Soldiers are foot soldiers who work for Beag.

Corrupted

  • Vilius

The main antagonist of the series. Vilius used to be a Tenkai Knight, but his energy became negative and turned against his former teammates. From then, he leads the Corrupted Army as their warlord to obtain Tenkai Energy and awakening the Tenkai Dragon. He is a very intelligent leader, and a deadly warrior armed with a trident. He can use Robofusion with the foot soldiers to turn into the Xenoship, and can also assume Titan mode. Although he has been defeated by Bravenwolf, he still manages to come back to life and makes plans to also invade Earth.
  • Granox
Voiced by: Steven J. Blum
Granox is a powerful henchman who works under Vilius. His armor seems based on a rhino's armor, and he is armed with a halberd or axe on a pole with a shield. He is usually fairly calm, and seeks to utilize his opponents' weaknesses.
  • Slyger
Voiced by: Crispin Freeman
Slyger is another powerful henchman who works under Vilius. He is armed with two claws and may be based off a tiger. He is sneaky and cunning, but he is also conceited and cowardly.
  • Gen Kurai and Dromus
Voiced by: Yuri Lowenthal
Gen is a mysterious new student who transfers to Guren's school. He secretly works under Vilius and can transform into Dromus, an evil Tenkai Knight who bears a strong resemblance to Bravenwolf except with grey & black armor with a scar on the left eye of his chest plate.
  • Beni and Venetta
Voiced by: Nika Futterman
Beni is a pink haired girl who is an accomplice to Gen. She can transform into Venetta, an evil Tenkai Knight with armor that resembles a spider. She is also the first female Tenkai Knight.
