Tender Loving Empire is an independent record label and retail consignment store based in Portland, Oregon.[1] The record label began in 2005 and the first Tender Loving Empire store opened in June 2007 in Northwest Portland. In May 2010 the current store opened in downtown Portland.[2]

Record Label

Founded in 2005, Tender Loving Empire has over 30 releases. The label was born in the basement of Jared and Brianne Mees's Portland home.[1] In 2007, when the Tender Loving Empire store opened, the label set up shop there. In 2010, it moved again to its current downtown location at 412 SW 10th Ave, next to Powell's Books.[3]

Tender Loving Empire puts out an annual compilation of local and national music, titled Friends and Friends of Friends. The fourth volume was released November 3, 2011.[4]

On August 3, 2011 Tender Loving Empire band Typhoon performed on the Late Show with David Letterman.[5]

Store

In 2007 the Tender Loving Empire store opened in NW Portland. The store sells handmade goods on consignment, all Tender Loving Empire releases, and has a local music section.[2] The store has a silk-screening studio in the back where they do custom orders and print their own line of t-shirts.[6] In 2010, the store moved to its bigger downtown location.[2]The Wall Street Journal has called the store a "dream boutique" and a "creative hub."[7]
